GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip (AP) -- Israel withdrew most of its ground troops from the Gaza Strip on Sunday in an apparent winding down of the nearly monthlong operation against Hamas that has left more than 1,800 Palestinians and more than 60 Israelis dead.
Even as Israel said it was close to completing its mission, heavy fighting raged in parts of Gaza, with at least 10 people killed in what U.N. and Palestinian officials said was an Israeli airstrike near a U.N. shelter. The United States lashed out at Israel, saying it was "appalled" by the "disgraceful" attack.
And with Hamas officials vowing to continue their fight, it remained uncertain whether Israel could unilaterally end the war.
Israel launched its military operation in Gaza on July 8 in response to weeks of heavy rocket fire, carrying out hundreds of airstrikes across the crowded seaside territory. It then sent in ground forces July 17 in what it said was a mission to destroy the tunnels used by Hamas to carry out attacks.
Hamas has fired more than 3,000 rockets into Israel during what has turned into the bloodiest round of fighting ever between the two enemies.
Lt. Col. Peter Lerner, an Israeli military spokesman, confirmed the bulk of ground troops had been pulled out of Gaza after the military concluded it had destroyed most of the tunnel network.
He said Israel had detected some 30 tunnels that were dug along the border for what he called a "synchronized attack" on Israel.
"We've caused substantial damage to this network to an extent where we've basically taken this huge threat and made it minimal," he said. The army had thousands of troops in Gaza at the height of the operation.

Bad idea.
Sooner or later they will have to finish the job, that’s a given
Mistake, Bibi.
As long as the world and Democrats support terrorists like Hamas, terrorism is what they will get.
I’m no military expert - my idea of military expertise is creating a recipe without eggs during WWII - but could this be withdrawing troops before annihilating Gaza?
You mean Hamas? Hopefully this sets back Hamas many years but I think the US and other countries will be rushing in with a lot of money for the Palies.
Ah, a man after my own heart. Hope your post doesn’t get pulled.
Well, I meant Hamas but I also meant Gaza who turned an orchard into a killing field.
Last night, I saw a video of IDF giving out ice cream bars to P. kids. The video reminded us that these children would grow up to be vicious haters of Israel, too.
It’s the tunnels underneath the hospitals and the day cares that need to go

Haven't read the thread, but I bet there's some criticism. It's Israel's call, and my guess the decision is based less on the American administrations views than any since Israel became a state. I can't know if they've adequately degraded Hamas capability any more than I can assess the northern threat. And while it would be nice to crush Hamas, who runs Gaza? Israel doesn't want to, Egypt won't though they'd be a good choice, and Abbas doesn't seem to be interested. This should have been a no brainer for him.
Perhaps when a nuclear detonation occurs over Washington D.C. - then the PC jackasses running our federal government will finally “get it” ... That is, at least those jackasses not vaporized in the attack.
Considering all the OTM that are now freely crossing our southern border; and considering that Jihaddists have been flocking to South America to learn Spanish and blend in with the Hispanic culture ... I expect the WMD detonations in our cites to be an event not to far removed from the present. Of course, knowing the Islamic inclination of the chief jackass now “in charge” - that SOB would probably be part of the plan in getting Americans killed by the millions ... I am certain the genocidal result would make Bill Ayers, his mentor, quite happy.
I'm reminded of a cartoon where a missionary is preaching hellfire to a group of Eskimos, who are all standing there with big, approving grins on their faces.
The United States lashed out at Israel, saying it was “appalled” by the “disgraceful” attack. “
Correction. Barry and his sympathizers “lashed out”, not the United States. Barry Soetoro’s words do NOT represent my opinion, nor the opinion of millions of outraged Americans. We’ve got a very bad man pretending that he is speaking on our behalf.

That’s what, a mere 100 a day? /s
