The largest recorded Ebola outbreak in history has led the U.S. Peace Corps to evacuate hundreds of volunteers from three affected West African countries, and a State Department official on Wednesday said two volunteers were under isolation after having contact with a person who later died of the virus.
Meanwhile, Liberia's president ordered the nation's schools to shut down and most civil servants to stay home as fears deepened over the virus that already has killed more than 670 people in West Africa.
The Peace Corps said it was evacuating 340 volunteers from Liberia as well as neighboring Guinea and Sierra Leone.
The State Department official said the two volunteers were not symptomatic and were under observation. The official was not authorized to discuss the cases for attribution, and declined to say where the volunteers were serving or when they were exposed.

Wonder why the US is still allowing commercial air service into the affected areas in West Africa?

Here’s a paranoid scenario for you:
What if one of these peace corps volunteers is infected and once back in the US decides that they’re need to “help out” at the humanitarian crisis on the southern border.
Very little mention about 340 people returning from a hot zone and scattering across the US.

It would not be hard for a dreadful “mistake” to occur under these circumstances. I’m more worried about somebody slipping through to the general population in this group as opposed to the two going to Emory where strict precautions are being taken. The healthcare personnel at Emory have every motivation to keep themselves (and thus others) from being exposed.
340 evacuees returning stateside and dispersing across the country. Just great.
An overconfidence that we can ‘handle’ an outbreak in this country.

Shouldn't they be isolated, just in case? It's not as if the experts know everything about this horrible virus. Maybe test again in 24-48 hours?
Also: False-negative RT-PCR results are likely to occur for patients with severe viral hemorrhagic fevers, especially in the acute phase of the disease where a rapid confirmation is required. Their plasma may contain large amounts of RT-PCR inhibitors, probably resulting from the decay of tissue. These inhibitors can be detected by control reactions with spiked samples (low copy numbers of control RNA, 1 log10 above detection limit of the PCR) (5). Control reactions to detect inhibitors of RT-PCR are mandatory for a safe diagnosis for patients with suspected VHF.

It sounds as if people that are at the stage of vomiting and diarrhea may present as a stomach virus, test negative, and then... are they monitored at all? I don't want to get in a tizzy about this, but I do want to be informed.
I take it that those 340 are Peace Corps volunteers. There’s no telling how others there are from countless other organizations there.
Brilliant. Just brilliant. Anyone returning from a hot zone should be unable to fly commercial or return until they have passed a 42 day quarantine. Period

The more I learn about this, the more I think that we are headed for some really big trouble.
There is just no way that this all is going to end well.
Logically, it seems that the ptb have determined that Ebola has already escaped Africa and they're going to "let it rip" and burn out. I can't imagine what will happen when it gets in refugee camps, war-torn areas and the Central American hordes in the US (etc)
There's another way to look at this. Do-gooders from all over the globe have enabled Africa to not take care of preventing and curing Ebola by doing it for them. Now they're pulling out. Is Africa prepared to take care of its own problem?
