More than half of the latest batch of air-traffic controller job offers nationwide went to people with no aviation experience as part of a program designed to expand hiring among the general public, the Federal Aviation Administration said Wednesday.
About 22,500 people without an aviation background initially applied. Of those, 837 were offered jobs. The remainder of the roughly 1,600 new controller slots went to more traditional applicants, including military veterans with aviation experience and accredited aviation school graduates.
The hiring breakdown marks a major shift in FAA recruitment strategy, which is now geared toward trying to keep ahead of a wave of controller retirements while also attracting more minorities and women to the nations largely white and male controller work force in airport towers and radar facilities, officials have said.

For almost the last 25 years, until the off-the-street hiring process was implemented in February, the FAA recruited controllers heavily from among military veterans possessing aviation experience and from the 36 FAA-approved college aviation programs across the U.S., the Tribune reported this spring.

Screwing veterans and white men,who went to ATC schools, all other federal agencies are AA cesspools.why should the FAA be exempt!
Look at it this way. The competent 50% will be handling 100% of the workload, so we're probably still OK.
Affirmative action will result in people being killed.
Because women and minorities are vastly under-represented in the government work force.
So what? The vastly larger “off the street” pool includes all types of engineers, geeks of all types and peeps who have always had a fascination with aviation even if they didn’t go into the military or go to an aviation school.
I don’t see why this is seen as a bad thing by so many on this thread.
Yeah, that’s the ticket, hire a bunch of ragheads and give them time off to pray. Oh and while you’re at it, “reconfigure” the facility bathrooms by removing the toilets and leaving just a hole in the floor so they will “feel at home.” Now there will be no need for them to learn to fly, they can just vector planes into each other.
Or affirmative action candidates?
Rush was talking about that yesterday - like he’d JUST discovered the movie.
Great movie, but I can’t recommend it to my current “circle” because of the vulgarity.
Who flies?
People who are rich enough to fly, or have to travel as part of a JOB.
these people are inherently targets of the left.
I had friends who were air traffic controllers.
It is so antiquated that I’m surprised it even worked.
FAA and Unions control the entire system.
Which means it doesn’t work very well.
“This decision is going to kill a lot of people.”
Liberal policies have been killing innocent people for decades.
"Don't worry scro'! There are plenty of 'tards out there living really kick ass lives. My first wife was 'tarded. She's a pilot now.'
That's a bad airplane! Are you down with it? You can crash at my pad. Dayum! What up?
“Chump don’ want no help, chump don’t GET da help!”
Most people have no idea how antiquated it is.
A multiple redundant computer based control system would be superior and much more efficient.
Tracking planes moving in 3D space with computers is like humans tracking a bunch of snails crawling across a table.
Multi-layered algorithms can be developed to handle most of the work load now done by humans.
Humans should always be in the loop, but if computers were fully utilized the ATC system could be much more efficient.
I once tried to get in as an ATC here in Canada. I didn’t make it through the interview and test process, particularly the verbal test section. I would hope that the FAA has similar standards to be followed before it would hire someone (to then be trained) for the job. And that permanent full-time employment would be conditional on successfully passing the training.
ATC is a very tough, demanding job requiring a certain type of person. A certain level of intelligence is required, but also skills in juggling multiple numbers (headings, flight numbers) and names in your mind simultaneously, while under pressure. I didn’t have it.
I don’t see anything wrong with trying to diversify the workforce - presumably there are women and minorities out there who would be really good at this job, but for some reason in this past they haven’t found their way to it. But ability has to be the predominant consideration in such a position.
Now that may be a poor choice of words, considering...
I agree. An even temperament, the ability to focus, adequate math abilities, the ability to think in 4D — all those things would be important, but are certainly not exclusive to aviators. Actually, given that the tower isn’t actually flying; it may be that a computer flight simulator “ace” is more qualified than someone with (say) qualifications to fly a Piper Cub.
My friend is ATC for over 20 years and has never flown a plane or had a plane crash on his shift....
If they were pilots,,, wouldn’t we have to pay them more?
How many of them are illegals? With Ebola?
