Militants resumed firings rockets into Israel from Gaza on Saturday, rejecting an extension to a ceasefire in a conflict in which more than 1,000 Palestinians, mostly civilians, have died.
Israel had agreed to extend an initial 12-hour pause in the fighting by a further four hours but this was rejected by Islamist group Hamas, which dominates Gaza.
Warning sirens sounded across the country as rockets were fired as far as the Tel Aviv area, police said. Israeli tank fire killed a man in the southern Gaza Strip, a local official said, announcing the first fatality after the breakdown of the ceasefire.
Even before the truce broke down, some Israeli ministers signaled that a comprehensive deal to end the 19-day conflict with Hamas and its allies was remote.
Gazans had earlier taken advantage of the lull in fighting to recover their dead and stock up on food supplies, flooding into the streets after the ceasefire began at 8.00 a.m. (0100 EST) to discover scenes of massive destruction in some areas.

Who didn’t see that coming?
A bunch. They’ve been buying used ones here and refurbishing them there ever since that Lebanon deal.
I seem to recall someone who opposed roundup and mass executions of unarmed Palestinian males aged 18-44, or some such, because such hysterical, indiscriminate war crimes would forfeit the moral high ground and amount to nothing more than murder.
Many Palestinians despise Hamas, but even if there was only ONE fighting age male in the whole land who despised Hamas, murder is murder.
Resorting to the same tactics as the savage animals we oppose would serve only to drive more moderate elements into the arms of the extremists, and would make us no better than them.
So, yes, despite the barbaric behavior of Hamas, I continue to oppose mass executions of all unarmed Palestinian males simply for the crime of existing inside the wrong lines on a map.
And so does Netanyahu, thankfully, because he wisely wants his nation, Israel (a tiny speck surrounded by the expansive Islamic world) to continue to exist.
The foolishness of advocating such mass murder would be both shortsighted and counterproductive, and most civilized minds, military or otherwise, can comprehend that.
They already live in the stone age.
There, fixed it.
I’m not advocating mass-murder at all, just mast-targeting. If the demographic (18-44 yo Palestinian males) feel threatened personally, they will self-extract themselves from the theatre.
Certainly you realize the rockets are being fired from 18-44yo Palestinian men.
Or maybe you don’t.
Too bad Israel doesn’t use Naphalm.
Or nerve gas
or FAEs...
or neutron bombs
or cluster munititions
or biowarfare
.........fight like wwii, win like wwii....fight like anything else.....and you'll be back at war with even MORE casualties than total war.
Those D-9 L-tracks are the perfect tool for cleaning up a scummy neighborhood and easing it back to the 12th century. And that bottom pic reminds me that just the vibration from that bigass engine will collapse most tunnels. But the single point ripper that they all have will absolutely remove any trace of raghead “civilization” wherever the operator drops it.
It’s notable that after our housing bust in ‘08 there was heavy construction equipment for sale all over the US and it mostly sold for heckuva low prices. I expect the Israelis were right in the middle of buying, especially at the auctions. I remember one auction especially, in Florida, about ‘010 when some 10,000 pieces of heavy equipment sold, all at the same auction. Machines like these D-9’s sold for around 1/10 of their new price-—banks took some real beatings on the stuff.
I'm all for the intelligent use of military ordnance in order to inflict maximum degradation of an enemy's ability to fight. And that will necessarily include civilian casualties.
Whoever was advocating a pogrom, dragging ALL Palestinian males ages 18-44 out of their homes, whether armed or not, whether Hamas or not, to be followed by castration and summary execution of said unarmed prisoners, was advocating mass murder.
And that's the only distinction I was trying to make.
To quote the owner of this site: "I don't advocate genocide or ethnic cleansing."
Well, neither do I, and performing the above-mentioned atrocity would be the very definition of ethnic cleansing.
So, once, again, I must apologize for being such a weak-kneed, dovish peacenik for expressing my opposition to outright murder driven by blind, satanic hatred.
Israel will win this conflict, but not by becoming the animals which they oppose.
The paleostines will destroy themselves if they keep firing at Ashkelon. It is an industrial city, and Gaza is down wind. The last part of Isaiah 14, and Zephaniah describe just that scenario. Burn Ashkelon, and everything down wind dies...
Take Gaza over again. It’s the only way. You need to reeducate these people.
I read the comment section at this Reuters article. Yikes Reuters must be upset. Most all agree with Israel.
What, is Reuters some kinda Nazi outfit?
Oh wait...I can't say that....they're German.
