The head of the IRS confirmed Wednesday that investigators looking into missing emails from ex-agency official Lois Lerner have found and are reviewing "backup tapes" -- despite earlier IRS claims that the tapes had been recycled.
IRS Commissioner John Koskinen, testifying before a House oversight subcommittee, stressed that he does not know "how they found them" or "whether there's anything on them or not." But he said the inspector general's office advised him the investigators are reviewing tapes to see if they contain any "recoverable" material.
The revelation is significant because the IRS claimed, when the agency first told Congress about the missing emails, that backup tapes "no longer exist because they have been recycled."
It is unclear whether the tapes in IG custody contain any Lerner emails, but Koskinen said investigators are now checking.
Republicans on the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee first raised questions about the backup tapes on Monday, releasing a partial transcript from an interview with IRS official Thomas Kane. In it, Kane said "there is an issue" as to whether all the backup tapes were destroyed. Asked if they might still exist, he said he didn't know but "it's an issue that's being looked at."

Crashed hard drive, intermittent printouts of official emails, lost or misplaced “tape backups”.....blah, blah blah.
You mean to tell me that IRS does not have a server, several in fact, with backups out the wazoo? You really mean to try and make us believe the IRS is living in the mid-80s? Really?
Personally, had I the power, that beady-eyed little weasel M’efer would be in a prison getting water boarded until he spilled.
The minute Lerner was done purging her Email database of incriminating Emails, she would tell her superiors they could announce that her Emails have been found. Looks like we’re finally there.

In the end...they don't matter...but....get Jarrett in the act...and heads will roll.
How can we trust them to scan the backup tapes? They should be turned over to an independent agent for review.

Yep. These tapes are supposedly in "IG" custody and are being examined by "investigators". No word on where the investigators are from, but hopefully they are independent and honest.

A rather curious choice of words. Generally speaking backup tapes store data. One can easily imagine that in a few days we will learn that the tapes were blank.
He’s only the head of a massively corrupt, bloated and inefficient government juggernaut tax collection agency. Under Nixon they’d say, “Do you have the correct information?”
Then Congress needs to subpoena the prints on that finger!
...or the “back-ups” are really newly produced and contain nothing of interest. I put nothing past these FED criminals.

Wanna bet there’s more than 18 minutes missing in those tapes?
I think the IRS suddenly finding backup tapes, etc. is directly due to the two court cases where judges are requiring someone in authority from the IRS to sign off under oath as to exactly what is going on .... and one judge assigned a magistrate (knowledgeable in such matters) to get involved with finding out if there was anything recoverable.
IRS response to Congressional investigation: ho hum. IRS response to Court of Law proceedings with two separate judges not buying the IRS b.s. & threat of jail time for perjury when they have to sign off under oath: hey, looky here .... we found something!

I haven ‘t heard about “backup tapes” since the 80s and 90s. Maybe even as far back as Nixon.....it is a squirrel. One that is being used to decoy anyone with any sense from realizing what is really going on here.
