Sowell: Bordering on Madness (Good Read)
Creators Syndicate ^ | July 22, 2014 | Thomas Sowell

Posted on 07/21/2014 12:11:02 PM PDT by jazusamo

In a recent confrontation between protesters against the illegal flood of unaccompanied children into the United States and counter-protests by some Hispanic group, one man from the latter group said angrily, "We are as good as you are!"

One of the things that make the history of clashes over race or ethnicity such a history of tragedies around the world is that — regardless of whatever particular issue sets off these clashes — many people see the ultimate stakes as their worth as human beings. On that, there is no room for compromise, but only polarization. That is why playing "the race card" is such an irresponsible and dangerous political game.

The real issue when it comes to immigration is not simply what particular immigration policy America should have, but whether America can have any immigration policy at all.

A country that does not control its own borders does not have any immigration policy. There may be laws on the books, but such laws are just meaningless words if people from other countries can cross the borders whenever they choose.

One of the reasons why many Americans are reluctant to keep out illegal immigrants — or even to call them "illegal immigrants," instead of using the mealy-mouthed word "undocumented" — is that most Hispanics they encounter seem to be decent, hard-working people.

This column has pointed out, more than once, that I have never seen Mexicans standing on a street corner begging, though I have seen both whites and blacks doing so.

But such impressions are no basis for deciding serious issues about immigration and citizenship. When we do not control our own borders, we have no way of knowing how many of those coming across those borders are criminals or even terrorists.

Hat Tip to george76 for linking this video earlier this morning.

It is an excellent and most interesting 14 ½ minute video interview of a retired Border Patrol officer, Zach Taylor, that addresses some points in detail that Thomas Sowell brings up in his article.

As good as they think they are, they weren't a part of the heritage that built and sustained the United States. They should be taking their goodness and change their own country.

It's not right for outsiders to demand entry into the United States so they could plunder the bounty that our own citizens created for themselves.

“It’s not right for outsiders to demand entry into the United States so they could plunder the bounty that our own citizens created for themselves.”

I don’t blame the people that live in those miserable places to want to come here. I know I would do the same thing if I was in their shoes. And I would bet you would do the same, especially when you’re treated as a national treasure when you get here!

No, the invasion problem we have is not the fault of the invaders, it is OUR fault for allowing them to invade and to actually have a welcome mat waiting for them. It is up to us to keep them out, but obviously the powers that be not only are not interested in doing that, they’re against it.

To take it out on the illegals is to focus on the wrong problem. The problem is American politicians, bureaucrats, corporations and regular people who see a benefit for them to let those people in. That’s where the focus ought to be.

This is no different than you leaving spilled sugar and syrup on the counter and floor and blaming the ants for coming into the house.

They come here and the government spends enough on them to make them the top 1%

“This column has pointed out, more than once, that I have never seen Mexicans standing on a street corner begging, though I have seen both whites and blacks doing so.”

This is a completely irrelevant point.

When DOCUMENTED citizens DO work, they are taxed and pay into the system. They pay their way.

When UNDOCUMENTED people work...they are just THAT ...UN documented... and are NOT paying taxes.

However, they will get to use parks, schools, roads, police services, fire dept services, etc.... all of which are funded by TAXES.

How is it possible to ignore that these services, this infrastructure can serve just SO MANY on the tax revenue which that community produces... others (UNDOCUMENTED’S) who HELP THEMSELVES these services and benefits, use this infrastructure, demand befits, etc. do so as a BURDEN to the system, to which they contribute NOTHING!

The unstated, but obvious gist to begin with; is that somehow they are entitled to be placed on the same field as American citizens, which in that vein would mean they think they are better than us (having not contributed one whit, but are entitled to all of America’s promises).

That is the implied meaning of “you’re no better than me”.

But you don't continue to let the ants into the house while you argue over who spilled the sugar, how to clean up the sugar, who will clean up the sugar, how you are going to prevent the sugar from spilling again, all the while letting the ants continue to eat your other foods.

That's also because they heard that "you didn't build that. Somebody else made that happen."

To foreigners, that was meant to diminish American citizens' claims on America.

"We are as good as you are!"

You abandoned your own country like rats deserting a sinking ship, sneaked into our country like thieves in the night, and are now making demands of us. We never left our country or sneaked in anywhere. That, right there, pretty much proves that no, you're not as good as we are.

Horsesh*t

These people are thieves. They come here wanting that which they did not earn.

The correct analogy would be me coming to your house and demanding one of your automobiles because I don’t have one. Then one of your neighbors taking it from you and giving it to me.

There are smarter men than Dr. Sowell, and there are wiser men than Dr. Sowell, but darn few of either, and even fewer of those that are both.

The only inference I can draw is that Dr. Sowell has never been to El Paso, TX.

When Obammy and Reid look at the flood of illegal Hispanics pouring over our southern border like water over Niagara Falls all they see is multiplied millions of new Dimocrat votes. IIRC Obammy got about 70% of the Hispanic vote last time around, and I'm sure the Dims would like to see that % go even higher when Mrs. Clinton runs against the next-in-line GOP burnt offering.

A small percentage of the illegal aliens are young children. The enemedia created lie makes a nice cover story for the low information fools.

The Russian Mafia / drug cartels are paying many of the coyotes / rapists to flood the border and beyond with gang bangers / Muslim terrorists. Even the Mexican military provides cover for the drug dealers .

The Russians, Mexicans, elites around the world , our border patrol, etc. know this.

The enemedia has their back.

Yeah, but the ants will if you, the owner of the house, don’t do something about it. Again the ants are not to blame if you have holes in the house and you leave them goodies on the table.

No the correct analogy is you leaving the door open, food on the table, a welcome mat at the door, them coming in eating the food and you letting them do it and asking them if they want a second.

YOU are letting them do that.

And it is US citizens (owners) of the US who are allowing immigrants to do what they are doing.
