Karl Albrecht, who with his brother Theo returned from Allied prisoner of war camps after World War II to find their mothers corner shop still standing in bombed-out Essen, Germany, then proceeded to build it into the international grocery empire Aldi, died on Wednesday in Essen. He was 94.
His death was confirmed by Aldi, which delayed the announcement until after his funeral.
The Aldi chain short for Albrecht Discount now has nearly 5,000 stores worldwide, including 1,300 in the United States, two of them in the New York City area, and all of them known for spartan décor and low prices. The higher-end Trader Joes chain is owned by an Albrecht family trust.

RIP
Thank you for saving my family from the high cost of Obama’s hate for the American economic process.
We’re big trader joe’s fans
Amen to that!
RIP; I’ve shopped at Aldi in Berlin....as well as the other store, founded by the other Albrecht brother: Lidl.
LOL
Both are good stores, to be honest, and I’ve always saved a good deal by going to either one.
My personal fave is a chain called “Kaufland”. Really good place to shop.
Kaufen = ‘to buy’ in German
I will honor his memory by buying and eating a $1 package of 36 sandwich creme cookies.
as you probably knew
RIP and thank you for a great store!
this was a very nice read about the founder of Aldi... i tried shopping at Aldi once since i have been in NC... while i know it serves a purpose, it was not my cup of tea... perhaps i should try again—maybe a different location... i am thinking the selection differs according to the day and even time of year...
Great stores, we use both ALDI’s and Trader Joes, Thank you
It’s right down the street from me. Save a LOT of money.
Actually, I didn’t until I moved to Berlin and a German friend explained to me the story behind Aldi and Lidl.
I found it pretty funny; a family feud!
Every time they have the Deutsche Küche Herring Fillets, I buy about 30 cans.
The same sort of thing happened at Adidas (named after Adi Dassler)....he and brother Rudolf fell out and Rudolf formed Puma. Now both companies have huge market share in sportswear, footwear, golf, etc.
Actually, to be technically correct, it would be, Adolph Dassler.
i started shopping at Aldi’s after my divorce. thank you for helping stretch my one income food dollar.
RIP.
RIP. We’ve only had Aldi here for six years, but it’s just fine. Dairy, meat, produce all good stuff. Generally 1 of whatever item, but that’s ok too. Probably a good reason prices are 15-25% lower than WallyWorld/Kroger! One beef is no baker’s yeast or baking powder kept as a stock item, but lots of baking staples they do have? Oh, well.
Aldi’s here is the only store I’ve seen with 82% cocoa bars. MMM And big 16” supreme pizzas for $5.99
Aldi rocks. Cheap and being European owned you get alot of imported things you don’t see anywhere else. I love their Irish cheeses.
