Nothing reminds me more of Saturday afternoons in the early 80s more than that theme song. My mom was addicted to the reruns they would be on at the time. I just had a hard time understanding why he was never there to pick up his phone at the start of the show.
He and Bill really clicked, starring again in The Ultimate Gift.
Excellent movie and worth showing the teens...great lessons contained in that one and superb cast!
ymmv
It is a shame they dont make actors like that anymore, and that we dont have more Americans like that.
Stuart Margolin as Angel - hilarious!
RIP
a bit of a ham but RIP
Garner was probably the best actor to master the romantic comedy and whimsical action hero following the style set by Cary Grant.
In addition he was an avid auto racing fan and amateur driver and made what I consider to be the best racing film ever—Gran Prix—where he did some of his own driving in a formula one car. I watched it the other day and it still stands up in the racing scenes.
RIP Jim
but oh....BTW:
Garner was a strong Democratic Party supporter, contributing over $7,500 to Democrats running for federal office the past seven years, including Dennis Kucinich (for Congress in 2002), Richard Gephardt, John Kerry, Barbara Boxer, and various Democratic committees and groups. Since 1982 Garner has given at least $29,000 to Federal campaigns, of which over $24,000 has been to the Democrats.[53]
On August 28, 1963, Garner was one of several celebrities to join Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in the “March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom.” In his autobiography, Garner recalled sitting in third row listening to Dr. King's “I Have a Dream” speech.
For his role in the 1985 CBS miniseries Space, the character's party affiliation was changed from Republican as in the book to reflect Garner's personal views. Garner said, “My wife would leave me if I played a Republican”.[54]
Prior to the entry of ex-San Francisco Mayor (later U.S. Senator) Dianne Feinstein, there was an effort by Democratic party leaders, led by state Senator Herschel Rosenthal, to persuade James Garner to seek the 1990 Democratic nomination for Governor of California.[55][56]
The Rockford Files was one of those shows that I made a point of to watch.
He and angel together were GREAT!!!!!!!
A wonderful man. R.I.P.
And like EMK, Garner never gave up on the Democrat “dream”.
FWIW, I spend the day yesterday with a good friend and we went to an arts festival in Baltimore. I pulled out my Samsung Galaxy cell phone out a couple of times to take pictures and if I wanted to, I could have taken hundreds of pictures and if I wanted to, I could have instantly uploaded them to FB or emailed them or when I got home uploaded them to my computer and even edited and or cropped the photos and printed out as many copies as I wanted on my personal printer.
I said to my friend; Remember when you had to go to the store to buy rolls of film that you had to be careful to load into the camera so as not to expose the film to light and you had to be careful of how many pictures you took so as not to run out of film, then you had to be careful to re-roll the film and put it back into the canister, then you had to take the film and drop it off, paying for it to get developed and then wait to get the pictures back? Then a good half of those pictures never turned out right, were terrible and the ones that werent ended up in a cigar box never to be seen again?
I do remember getting one of those Polaroid One Step cameras one Christmas back in the late 70s when I was a teenager and thinking how cool it was. IIRC although while it was great that it instantly self developed actually within a minute or two, the film was rather expensive and there werent many features to those cameras like zoom, etc. and most of the pictures turned out pretty bad then and after a few years most of those Polaroid pictures faded and or deteriorated terribly.
Jim Rockford :(
My all time favorite movie.
RIP James.
Handsome fellow with great comedic timing. Seem to recall some political positions from him I didn’t care for but certainly a fine on-screen talent.
They met at an Adlai Stevenson rally. He was a very strong Democrat.
