How exactly does the IDF dismantle Hamass offensive tunnels, some 60-feet-deep, over a mile long, with multiple exits.
The tunnel threat, the unknowingness of it, has eclipsed the threat of rockets in Israels war with Gaza. This may change in the future, if detection methods improve. For now, though, after narrowly thwarting a mega-attack in the Eshkol region on Thursday, Israel has sent in troops to find, probe, and destroy the underground arteries that stretch beneath the border, all along the border.
Brig. Gen. Miki Edelstein, the Gaza division commander, told reporters near an offensive tunnel discovered in October 2013 that the entrance to that tunnel was likely in the back yard of a civilians home in Rafah.
Brig. Gen. (res) Shimi Daniel, a former commander of the combat engineering corps, painted a more complex picture. He said Thursday on Channel 2 news that the entrance shafts of the tunnels are located within civilian homes and that, by the time troops arrive, theyve already poured fresh concrete over the opening.

They need a big Rodenator.
Heres a running account of news reports related to these recent events with Israel and Hamas. If you want to catch up on the news accounts ... they are here ...

Its listed from newest to oldest, so go to the bottom to start.
Use Zippo Tracks to fill the tunnel then detonate the tunnel.
Weren’t there “earthquake” bombs used during the Vietnam war to collapse large areas of tunnels? Of course, that would probably take out whole neighborhoods in Gaza with the usual condemnation.
Set up a number of huge pumps from the Med.
Like the old joke, put a wall around it and fill it with water.
When it’s thoroughly saturated after a number of months, ‘bounce it’.
The whole region will probably subside.
Blow up the homes
Daisycutters.
The new versions I believe are called MOABs.
Bigger, badder boom.
Of course to get to the tunnels you have to go through everything above.
oops.
Ender’s Game
What did you think it was about?
—big blowtorch and fan on an entrance or pump in propane and ignite-—
I’ve heard you can use carbide and water. The gas is heavier than air. If the moles are bad in your yard, you can lift the whole thing.
If there’s a reason why this wouldn’t work, I haven’t heard it.
An FAE would be perfect.
Cheap, effective, and environmentally friendly.
“Werent there earthquake bombs used during the Vietnam war to collapse large areas of tunnels?”
In WW2 the Brits used Lancaster’s to deliver a single deep penetrating bomb. It shook the earth so much that it collapsed nearby structures like bridges, aquifers and buildings. It was like a localized earthquake. The IDF would essentially have to level every building in Gaza.
They should design really small seeker drones and manipulate them remotely. There is ground penetrating radar that will probably locate them. Rest assured the IDF will use the latest technology. I doubt they’ll go in and search like they did last time.
I like it.
Interesting. They mention that it is harder to detect the tunnels than it is to destroy them.
When they do get technical means to detect the tunnels, they should keep it/them secret for surprise in future combat, and prepare a special operation to make every Hamas operative seek to avoid tunnel duty for a generation.
In addition to technical means of detection, an Intelligence task force should get to know the tunnelers, so that they get to know all their “tells” - movements of equipment, supplies, debris, or technical experts - and map them out in detail for attack
I’m kind of surprised that anyone could build a tunnel under Israel. With ground radar and seismic sensors available I’d think they’d have that covered.
We’ve got seismic sensors that can track an oil drill bit thousands of feet under ground, surely they could track tunnel rats.
“Im kind of surprised that anyone could build a tunnel under Israel.”
I think the tunnels are only under Gaza. Mostly they go out of Gaza to Egypt. But they’ve run all over Gaza so they can hide stuff from Drones.
