Department of Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson shocked senators of both parties when he revealed that it costs $250 to $1,000 per day to house each of the immigrant children who have recently arrived at the border.
When Johnson reported that figure, there was an audible gasp, a bipartisan gasp, Senator Marco Rubio (R., Fla.) told National Review Online.
Senate Budget Committee chairwoman Patty Murray (D., Wash.) wouldnt comment on the overall cost of housing so far. Its in the president request, she said. President Obama asked Congress to provide $1.8 billion to the Department of Health and Human Services to provide the appropriate care for unaccompanied children, consistent with Federal law, while maintaining services for refugees.
Senator John McCain (R., Ariz.) was one of members of the Gang of Eight who wrote the comprehensive immigration bill that passed out of the Senate last June, but he identified the housing costs as a reason to remove the children from the United States quickly.
The moral of the story is, turn them around quickly, McCain told NRO. Send the message by sending planeloads full of them back to the country they came from, and the parents or whoever who paid the coyotes thousands of dollars to bring them to the United States will think its not such a good idea.
Senator Jay Rockefeller (D., W. Va.) wasnt at the Johnson briefing, but he wasnt surprised by the figure. Housing people its just like prisoners, Rockefeller said. Prisoners can be $50,000 a year or more.
My daughter comes back today from church camp. I paid $275 for 5 days and nights for food, lodging, entertainment, and bible study included, no extra charge.
Cronies are making the big bucks. Never let a scandal or crisis go to waste.
I would like to see this on paper. Gasped? I would have burst out laughing and asked if. 3 year old wrote it.
1/2 lb rice and beans per day per refugee...err illegal alien will cost the government around 12 million for the year. Add another 10 million if you want to give each of the 50,000 1/2 chicken per day.
Housing the 50,000 for a year at 50 bucks a day adds another 912 million.
We are looking at about 1+ billion to keep them here. Add blankets, pillows, cleaning services and other incidentals, add another billion.
So.... It would take 400 flights n C17’s to move the 50,000 illegals back to their home countries. At. 23k per hour for flight time, it would cost approximately 125 million. If you gave each of the 50,000 5 thousand to start new lives back in their home countries would cost 250 mil.
350 million to send them home with 5k or 2+ billion, not including medical care. If you ran 10 flights a day, everyone can be home by labor day and the thugs could use this data to hammer the rats.
Illegal immigrants are now the 1%
It would be cheaper to send the “children” on cruises until they’re sent home.
If it were up to me, I'd declare war on the SOBs.
Good point, ours was $129 for five days last year, but that camp was heavily subsidized by private donations in the $10K+ range, as I think most of them are. Still, cost no where near what DHS wants.
bump
The federal government is totally out of control. It is a joke, a farce.
I think DHS is fishing for "permission" to do just exactly that, as well as to house them in luxury hotels. Then Congress will praise them for saving money.
They are illegal aliens. They are criminals.
Send them on a one-way cruise to Guantanamo Bay and house them there. Next stop, back to the capital of your home country.
Priceline shows a First Class adult fare (round trip) San Antonio to Guatemala of $1188. It won’t show one way fares but figure half that, so $594. A chartered flight for a planeload should be even less, say half of that or about $300.
So...get ‘em on a plane and get them home.
And if they won't pay then issue Letters of Marque [US Constitution, Art. I, Sec. 9].
The federal government has thousands of empty buildings that are sitting empty doing nothing.
Send them there and let charities pick up the rest of the tab.
Problem solved.
I know! They’re all going to stay at Martha’s Vineyard.
Na, mine neither.
Send them back then we aren’t stuck with the tab of these illegals living in the lap of luxury on $1000/day.
I dunno, but I know what I think about it.
Do the math...
Let's say I want to take our family of six on a vacation down to the nearby beach. Instead of $250-1,000 per day for each of us (that's $1,500-6,000 per day that the illegal aliens are costing), we lowball our figure to a mere $1,000 a day ($7000 a week) for all 6 of us...
Here is what we can get at the height of the summer season for a vacation on this nearby beach...
Check it out...

Ok, Ok. I'm lavishing our family vacation a bit, but it's for a good cause, no?
The house has 6 bedrooms and 6 baths and sleeps 18. So I gave everybody their own bedroom and private bath (nice, huh?). Then of course, they are right smack on the beach so they get to swim and sun anytime, fish, whatever.
Despite all that, it still only costs me $5,770 for the week which is a bargain. That is only $825 per week per person (or, a mere $137 per day). And then, of course, in the "off season" starting September the price really drops to a bargain! But if we ate out at the finest restaurants it might approach the $7,000 original figure, so we are "close" to what it is now costing the government (on the "lowest" end).
So, my question is, why not send all these kids to live on the beach? it would be a lot cheaper!
My other question is, who is making all the money off these illegal alien children and the American taxpayers...?
This is such a scam people should be shot for doing it!
