Microsoft to cut 18,000 jobs this year as it chops Nokia

SEATTLE (Reuters) - Microsoft Corp will slash up to 18,000 jobs, or 14 percent of its workforce, this year as it almost halves the size of its newly acquired Nokia phone business and tries to transform into a cloud-computing and mobile-friendly software company.

The larger-than-expected cuts, announced on Thursday, are the deepest in the company's 39-year history and come five months into the tenure of Chief Executive Officer Satya Nadella. He outlined plans for a "leaner" business in a public memo to employees last week.

Our employees have them too, looks good and they are not tied to contracts. The apps suck but they’re biggest edge is for the anti Apple and Droid crowd.

-— I love my Nokia Windows phone. Hope they keep coming, anyway :-) -—

Me too. I’ve tried Apple, Android and Windows. I like Windows the best and Android the least, although they’re all good.

Its interface is the most readable, and it’s the best for one handed operation. Doesn’t have many apps, bit I only use a handful anyway. I use my phone mainly for business.

Plus, it was so much less expensive. $100 with a $30/month T-Mobile plan.

Bill Gates is working to institute Common Core standards because he doesn’t want new Microsoft employees, he wants new tech support customers. Bill Gates is trying to create a Cargo Cult of idiots worshipping at the altar of Microsoft tech support.

I could pick five random people off the street who could have designed a better marketing campaign for the Xbox One than the idiots Microsoft hired to run it.

Well, it couldn’t possibly be worse than everything that happened with the Wii U.

Your; "I’ve lost track of how many people think that teens or twentysomethings are technological prodigies..."

Hear, hear!

They have no problem-solving skills because they cannot reason. And that also means they are very difficult to teach and incapable of learning on their own.

But their self esteem is enormous!

Haha, true. To be fair, the Wii U was doomed regardless of how good the marketing for it would be (and the marketing was terrible), as Nintendo's strategy with the original Wii was remarkably short-sighted. They neglected hardware improvements, gameplay innovations beyond the motion control, and third-party support (all which anger the dedicated buyers) in favor of drawing large numbers of first-time buyers. Those buyers were non-committal and never purchased much beyond the bundled-in Wii Sports.

The Wii U hasn't completely neglected hardware improvement and seems to be doing slightly better on third-party support, but they have a long way to go if they want to restore their hardcore fanbase. The Wii U's gimmick is also unappealing to casual players, as the Gamepad doesn't really give people an entirely new perspective on playing games in an era which is dominated by tablets.

The Xbox One would have done fine if they didn't focus on TV or Kinect in their presentations, and didn't strike a deal with the perverts in the NSA. The NSA decision was so spectacularly bad that I wonder if the Dementocrats threatened them for initially refusing to comply. Then again, Bill Gates has become rather foolish since the Communist 2001 anti-trust settlement, although it's hard to tell whether he has become foolish out of hatred or out of fear. Supporting Communist Core and posting garbage like this makes me believe the former, however.

Microsoft tech support

Now there's a joke in itself!

Had two minor problems with Win 8.1 on a new laptop, called Microsoft tech support, got into an argument with both techs I spoke with, after an hour or so hung up on both, solved the problems myself after a couple of days.
They will, under no circumstance, admit that the problem was with Win 8.1, even after I proved it.

Arrogant bastards.

Still think Win 8.1 is good and very fast, but the Microsoft folk ain't helping their cause.

I really wanted an 8.1 phone, too. I just renewed my contract, and will get a new 930. Can’t wait for the packet to arrive :-)
