“It would take a pretty good missile to shoot down a 777 at 35,000 ft traveling 500 knts.”
True this doesn’t sound like a probable surface to air shoot down. More like an onboard incident.

Whatever
this is, it is intersting that it has happened to two Malaysian Air planes within a relatively short period of time.
So far nothing from the Airline HQ, promised a statement regarding an "onboard incident".

From Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur I believe

Yes, I know the Ukrainians have been shooting down their own planes in order to blame Russia for this. 3 or 4 in past two days I believe.

Per CBS radio here — Russian separatists on social media are claiming that they did it.

The black box should tell the story.

FoxNews Headline: Interfax says plane was shot down “at altitude”
Ukranians are blaming Russian surface-to-air missile.
Ukraine says all 295 are dead.

Onboard incident right above a known Russian AA emplacement? Ok.

MANPADs could do it...stinger maybe. Not at 33,000 feet. You're talking S-400 or something like that.
To: Cyman
Not if the jetliner is at latitude and speed. Now on approach or takeoff then yes a manpad is easily capable of taking out a jetliner. This one was taken out by Russian military ground to air missile battery. Big oops for the Russians, they should know better.

For the record, broadcast networks ABC, CBS and NBC interrupted programming for live reports on the plane crash.
