Exclusive: GM recalls some cars with problematic switches; judges others safe

General Motors Co last month recalled millions of vehicles with three different designs of ignition switches that could accidentally turn off the engine and disable air bags in a crash. But the automaker has concluded that more than 2 million other vehicles having exactly the same switches are safe.

The vehicles which have not been recalled include fullsize crossovers such as the Buick Enclave and Chevrolet Traverse made from 2007 to the present, which share a switch with recalled late-model Chevrolet Camaros and Cadillac CTSs. Two other switch designs are in other sets of vehicles.

GM spokesman Alan Adler said that factors including the kinds of suspension used in different vehicles could explain why a switch that accidentally turned off in one type would not turn off in another, but he said there was no single reason.

“suspension used in different vehicles COULD explain why a switch that accidentally turned off in one type would not turn off in another”

“Could” looks like the key word. Drive at your own risk Freepers.

There shouldn’t be one of these vehicles on the road unless they have been repaired. How about the rest of us who could get creamed by one of these cars? Our lives mean nothing?

I am in a carpool that consists of 3 of us, one of whom drives a Chevy Cruze (Government Motors). She took her car in for a recall on the airbags, which were inspected and juded "A-OK". Yesterday, she was in a wreck in which she broadsided a car that ran a red light (I was fortunately not riding with the carpool that day). No one was injured; but her recalled and inspected airbags failed to deploy. The wrecker driver said that sometimes, the police issue tickets to people in wrecks if their airbags are not deployed, as they suspect seatbelts were not being worn (airbags do not deploy of a seatbelt is not being used).

No way I'll ever buy a Government Motors car.

Yep, exactly what I though. Nothing like NOT being absolutely certain when peoples lives may be at stake.

Had 5 GMs in a row. Latest was a 2003 SUV. Not any more. I don't like to use the word “never” but I won't be buying any gm products for the forseeable future.

It’s just a matter of time before GM goes belly up again. And I guess the Federal government will circumvent bankruptcy laws and bail them out. What every happened to free markets and capitalism?
