White House defies House Oversight Committee subpoena - advisers are 'absolutely immune'

House Oversight and Government Reform Committee Chairman Darrell Issa subpenaed the president's official political adviser, David Simas

Issa is concerned that Simas may be violating a federal law that bans most employees of the executive branch from engaging in political activity

White House Counsel sent Issa a letter last night claiming the president's 'immediate advisers are absolutely immune' from such demands

Issa held a hearing today anyway, claiming that his committee has a 'legal obligation' to make sure taxpayer funds are being used properly

Full title - White House defies House Oversight Committee subpoena on the grounds that presidential advisers are 'absolutely immune' from testifying before Congress

Rep. Elijah Cummings, Oversight's ranking Democrat, argued during the hearing that Issa's behavior 'undermines' and 'degrades' the committee

Someone buy that guy a mirror.

To be “fair”, something that Dims don’t do, there are several Court rulings that support the immunity of advisers. This is probably a loser in Court.

If he has done anything politically active other than advising, then he is out from under the umbrella of protection.

Issa just got his butt cleaned. The communists democrats run America and they will teach Issa a real lesson on who has the power.

LOL! My thought exactly.

If they're paid with Public funds, then the Committee has EVERY right to question them. The White House squawk of 'immunity!' is bogus.

Actually I think this is the logical conclusion for what Issa has pursued. T the end of the day he can say, “well, I held hearings, el Presidente defied me, I voiced my disappointment, and there is nothing further I can do”. Its allthose f¥@kers can do including chairman Rogers, and chairman Camp. I hold out hope that Trey Gowdey will thru his fortitude get different results.

The House needs to start exercising the power of the purse - see how those “advisers” like being ‘immune’ from a paycheck.

Like that’ll happen.

Executive privilege only applies to communication between the advisor and the president.

Well the House just cut hundreds of millions from the IRS budget. They also blocked bonuses from going to high IRS officials.

What was interesting was that many Dems voted with them.

You're right, it probably won't.

But is IS an excellent idea! :-)

Didn’t Issa make his rep/fortune selling Viper car burglar alarms?
Why don’t we have a lawyer like Gowdy or Cruz prosecuting this, instead of Inspector Cleuseau?

Cut the money off. Simple and it works 100% of the time EXACTLY as the founders designed it.
