A ten year old boy in Georgia is lucky to be alive after he was shot by a police officer who was firing his gun at a dog. According to multiple reports, the police officer was in pursuit of a robbery suspect at the time of the indecent. A dog crossed paths with the officer and he decided to shoot at it.
His shot missed the dog and the stray bullet struck the young Dakota Corbitt who was playing nearby. It is still unclear as to why the officer felt the need to shoot at the dog in the first place, and there is no indication that the dog approached the officer in a threatening manner.
The bullet entered from the back of the knee and exited out of the front of the childs leg.
Janelle Rich, Corbitts sister, told reporters of the horrific experience of her brothers attack, and said that the officer seemed to have no remorse about what he had done.
I ran out the house with one of my kids and saw my little brother on the porch pouring blood. He [the officer] was sitting there like he didnt have a care in the world. Rich said.
The officers name has not been released, nor has any information about his disciplinary action.
After the Dakota was shot he was rushed to Coffee Regional Medical Center and then transferred to Savannah Memorial Hospital where he was held for several hours for surgery.
The family waited in the hospital all night thinking that their son would need surgery. Luckily, hours later after lengthy examinations, they were told that the boy would not need surgery because no vital arteries were hit by the bullet. The full extent of the wound is unknown, and it is likely that the child will be traumatized for his entire life.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation was called to investigate the shooting, however since that is just another state institution it is doubtful that the family will see any justice.
Guess cop didn’t know the difference between a dog and a kid. Maybe he should go look at some more pictures to see the difference. Maybe.
O k .. Beer summit time..
If ever there was a safety issue right up a community organizer’s alley so to speak, this is it.
Please, Mr. PoliceMan, Stop shooting our kids and dogs.
Cats are on their own. :-p
“Nice shootin’, Tex”
Bill Murray.
Ghostbusters.
There was a thing on Drudge sometime back about a family pet being shot by a cop every 98 seconds or something. Are they taught to hate dogs at the police academy?
Jeepus what a knucklehead!
Poor little kid.
This type of dumbass crap needs to stop.
“It is still unclear as to why the officer felt the need to shoot at the dog in the first place,”
Fish gotta swim, bird gotta fly.
It's genetic. It's been bred into them. Sort of like pit bulls. You can never feel completely safe around one.
The article reads just a TAD bit jaded.
They should prosecute him for shooting this kid. It sounds like his act was intentional.
It may not have been life threatening, but it could still be disabling because tissue damage doesn’t always heal completely, especially one so young.
In all my more than 30 years as a cop, I never once shot a dog. You just learned to deal with all the dog situations in other ways. A kick in the head, putting something between you and the dog, etc. Tossing garbage cans in their direction was my favorite, worked most of the time (of course we had metal cans back then ... the noise and all).
Don't tell anyone, but the cop's name is Michael Vickers.
That cop needs to be in prison.
He saw a dog and just decided to shoot it for no reason?
Forgetting your primary mission (pursuing the robbery suspect) is inexcusable.
Dirty shoot.
Was the kid holding a Nintendo WiFi at the time???
Maybe he was the real target —
I don’t understand why cops don’t use mace.
Bicycle riders use a civilian form of machine and it works like a charm.
Bear spray will stop a grizzly.
So shooting dogs is totally evil and cops should be disciplined for doing so.
