Obama, at Ramadan Dinner, Decries Mideast Bloodshed
By CAROL E. LEE President Barack Obama, lamenting the “heart-wrenching” violence in the Middle East, said Monday the U.S. will work to forge a cease-fire between the Israelis and Palestinians and welcomed a proposal put forward by Egypt.
Mr. Obama, speaking Monday at a White House dinner marking the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, said Israel has a right to defend itself against rocket attacks from Hamas, but called the deaths of Palestinian civilians a tragedy.
“I believe further escalation benefits no one, least of all the Israeli and the Palestinian people,” Mr. Obama said. “So we’re going to continue doing everything we can to facilitate a return to the 2012 cease-fire. We are encouraged that Egypt has made a proposal to accomplish this goal, which we hope can restore the calm that we’ve been seeking. ”
Ultimately, Mr. Obama said, the conflict will only be resolved through a broader peace deal between the Israelis and Palestinians. Mr. Obama had pursued such a deal, but talks have stalled.
His comments Monday were his most substantive since violence broke out in Israel and Gaza. The president is facing a series of foreign policy crises at once, and noted that many of them are taking place in the Middle East, including Syria and Iraq.
