Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley advocated for sympathy for the surge of young Central American immigrants flooding the U.S. southern border, arguing that to turn the children away without due process would be un-American given what violence awaits in their home countries.
"We are not a country that should turn children away and send them back to certain death," he told reporters Friday at a National Governors Association meeting in Nashville. ....
O'Malley said the children deserve due process under U.S. law.
"They should have their ability to make their case for protection and asylum in the United States," he said.
"I believe that it is contrary to everything that we stand for as a people to try to summarily send back to death, whether it's in famine; death whether it's in the middle of the ocean; death whether it's in a war torn area or death in a place where gangs are the greatest threat to stability and the rule of law and Democratic institutions in this hemisphere."

Mark Kirk said Thursday that 429 unaccompanied minors from the Mexican border crisis were in Chicago and urged they undergo criminal background checks, he drew fire today from an immigrant-rights group and Democratic Rep. Luis Gutierrez of Chicago.Jennifer Chan, with the National Immigrant Justice Center in Chicago, said today that the children — the number of whom she declined to specify — were in “Chicagoland” shelters whose locations were not disclosed so as to protect the children’s safety and privacy. She would not say whether “Chicagoland” meant the city and its suburbs.
“I think that Sen. Kirk is making a lot out of nothing,” she said, describing the long-standing shelters as secure. “It’s not something people should panic about. Children aren’t running loose on the streets or anything.
“The children are in the secure custody of HHS. It’s not a detention setting; it’s a kid’s shelter. But they can’t just walk out the door.”
Gutierrez reacted to Kirk’s statement with even sharper criticism, saying Kirk “should be ashamed of himself.”
“Rather than exploiting and demonizing children to score political points, how about the senator works with the president to solve a national problem?” Gutierrez asked.

A: Many experts say that while tens of thousands of children are fleeing Central America because of gang violence and criminal activity, most cannot prove they qualify for asylum after entering the U.S.
There is a small chance the children will get asylum, immigration attorney and law professor David Simmons said. Simmons, who teaches at the University of Denver law school and has 30 years of experience as an immigration lawyer, said even being forced to join gangs, as many Central American kids claim, does not necessarily qualify as being persecuted.
“If you’re a victim of gang violence, you haven’t been singled out for political persecution,” he said. “It may be a very good reason to get out of your country, but it’s not political persecution.”
I guess children in Detroit & Chicago would qualify for asylum for being “persecuted” by liberals interpretation of the law!

In asking if every child from all parts of the world manage to make it to the Mexico border and were directed to be taken across the border in his mind they should all be allowed to remain here. ??His speaking like this,that all illegals from every where are understanding and being told , it’s catch and release and we are well taken care of,giving free medical care and we are set free within days and they will buy you a bus ticket to travel on to your family... I am confused, how does adding more welfare recipients to this country save any children? I am also wondering, why are we the USA responsible for the conditions in central America? How does adding MS13 gang members to the already over loaded gang situation in this country do anything to help the children?
