While it is not a unique observation, but The Root and Daily Beast columnist Keli Goffs column on this disturbing trend is important.
In her column published on Friday, The Secret War on Black Republicans, Goff writes and reports on how African-Americans are shamed and intimidated if they come out as Republicans. Often times, they endure far worse treatment from their fellow African-Americans if they run for public office as a Republican.
Citing one recent example in which Florida Republican congressional candidate Gloreatha Scurry-Smiths face on a campaign billboard was painted white by a vandal, Goff noted how hurtful that experience was for the candidate and her family. She also remarked on how that episode went largely unnoticed by the national media.
As a black conservative often times you are thought of as an Uncle Tom or perhaps a traitor to your own race, Smith told Goff.
The Daily Beast columnist also observed that, outside of conservative media outlets, the incident was given little attention. By comparison, Goff noted, a Nebraska parade float that featured an outhouse marked Obama Presidential Library drew international press attention last week due to its perceived racial connotations.
Former Republican National Committee Chairman and Maryland Lieutenant Governor Michael Steele shared similar tales of racial abuse with Goff. He noted that his campaign literature was also defaced, that he was called an Uncle Tom, and had Oreo cookies thrown at him during a 2002 debate.
And there seems to be this attitude they can get away with it and in a large number of ways they do. Because the press does not go after such attitudes the way they would if, for example, a conservative were seen holding a poster of Barack Obama in a disparaging caricature.
Goffs indictment continued when she noted that Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-MD) was never pilloried or required to apologize to Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas when he called him an Uncle Tom. The columnist noted that Thompsons defense, that he could use that language because he, too, is an African-American, seemed to have put that controversy to bed.
It is an interesting piece, thoroughly reported, and worth the read. Goff is no conservative, and she will find readers who would otherwise tune out a conservative voice discussing this poisonous condition. Her honest reporting in this matter may go a long way toward creating a dialogue around the perception that African-Americans will be mocked and harassed if they express who they truly are.

As a black conservative often times you are thought of as an Uncle Tom or perhaps a traitor to your own race,
often times?.........often times? How ‘bout EVERY time. Gotta keep ‘em on da plantation YO!
This is frustrating beyond belief. Even in an article that allegedly is sympathetic to Republicans, you have a statement like this. I cannot think of a bigger lie in American politics than the idea that the GOP has an "unflattering racial history." And this idea that the "Southern Strategy" was some deliberate racial ploy that a Republican RNC chairman should apologize for is disgusting. It all simply plays into the idea that the GOP is hostile to blacks.
The Democrats were, are and always will be the Party of Race. They played on anti-black prejudice to stay in power until about the 1960s, then they whipped up black racial hostility to stay in power after that. A big chunk of the media is an arm of the Dem Party so of course they are going to ignore stories about Libs and Dems using racism to attack black Republicans.
Because the left-wing fifth-column media are lying, traitorous, oxygen-stealing pieces of human excrement.
Why don’t you tell us how you really feel? LOL
bkmk
It’s the Democrat slave owners doing the only thing they know how to do. They get the “house slaves” to bully and intimidate the ones who fall out of line.
Except the message, if the candidate is a real conservative, should be that blacks, like all other American ethnicities, should stand on their own two feet and shun gov. help. Obviously, this is the last thing American blacks want to hear. Time to cut the cord and the pleading and begging.
I’m sorry, explaining the racist history of the Dem Party to blacks is useless. It all comes down to “what are you going to give us?” Pleading and explaining why conservatism is good for them is not something they want to hear.
Even the local stations mediots puke out their leftist propaganda with the Pecksniffian tone of self-righteousness.
No matter what the perversion, junk science, or hype, these local clymers will intone the excreted topic with an air of respectability, as they draw the listeners of their broadcast with a rhetorical question, e.g., "Marriage to your pet! Like global warming, is it an idea finally acknowledged as valid? Stay tune."
Secret? Ain’t nothing secret ‘bout it. Been going on for years. Just ask Thomas Sowell or Clarence Thomas.
And based on that the conservative presentation should be blunt and to the point; not in your face, but very short, clear, concise - maybe a little sharp.
Something like - I’m not here to give you anything beyond liberty. Freedom isn’t free you have to work for it. You want freedom, step one is start acting as an independent individual instead of a dependant serf who asks and grovels.
