FULL TITLE: Conservatives Are Purposely Making Their Cars Spew Black Smoke To Protest Obama And Environmentalists
Pickup trucks customized to spew black smoke into the air are quickly becoming the newest weapon in the culture wars.
"Coal Rollers" are diesel trucks modified with chimneys and equipment that can force extra fuel into the engine causing dark black smoke to pour out of the chimney stacks. These modifications are not new, but as Slate's Dave Weigel pointed out on Thursday, "rolling coal" has begun to take on a political dimension with pickup drivers increasingly viewing their smokestacks as a form of protest against environmentalists and Obama administration emissions regulations.
Last month, Vocativ noted many coal rollers focus their fumes on "nature nuffies," or people who drive hybrids, and "rice burners," or Japanese-made cars.
"The feeling around here is that everyone who drives a small car is a liberal," a roller named Ryan told Vocativ. "I rolled coal on a Prius once just because they were tailing me."
Weigel spoke to a seller of coal rolling customization equipment who described why some drivers see spewing smoke as a political protest.
"I run into a lot of people that really dont like Obama at all," the salesperson said. "If hes into the environment, if hes into this or that, were not. I hear a lot of that. To get a single stack on my truckthats my way of giving them the finger. You want clean air and a tiny carbon footprint? Well, screw you."

You get extra points if the automatic headlights come on.
Bonus extra points if you can blow it in one window and out another.

What? Out here, a lot of guys have their diesel-with-dualies pickups duded up with twin stacks-I’m pretty sure it is just a cowboy/redneck fashion statement...
What they are doing is most definitely political speech and is thus protected by the first amendment.
Jam DC and race your engines in idle
Rolling coal has been around since heck was a pup. You can find some videos on YouTube. There are all sorts of targets for the smoke (including cops) or none at all and most get a ton of angry ecowhining in the comments. Here’s one from 4 years ago featuring a logging truck and bicycle riders - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZdDxjge5hmY
When I rode a Harley with a carb I could shoot a bang and flames from the tailpipe by cutting the ignition out and then, after about a second, in again while rolling at speed. Yee haw.
That said, I never did it to be gratuitous. Either by myself on open road, or once in a blue moon on a tail gater.
There *IS* such a thing as gratuitously making enemies, though.
It’s not great,it’s asinine and juvenile.

I am from New England, not originally. It was from the Navy. I cannot WAIT to get out of the state of CT. I got a job offer from Iowa, which I think I will take.
BTW. I seen a lot of those trucks with smokestacks around here. I find them amusing. I wouldn’t do it myself.
This is so funny. I could not stop laughing. I am going to modify my 1995 Ford F250 diesel.
If the Prius is on my left, he's going to get a face full of smoke enveloping his car.
My exhaust pipe, as it emerges from underneath, points slightly down and to the left at about Prius roof height.
Presently my Mog runs clean except for the first 2 to 3 minutes of warmup, it belches mostly blue, and sometimes a little black smoke.
I am dating a black woman, should I start referring to that as “rolling coal”? lol
ATF is basically light oil with tons of detergents in it.
“some fruit hipster in an econobox.”
I’m always prying those things out of my truck’s wheel wells.
In high school, I had a buddy who would cut his ignition while rolling by in his Mopar, then pump the gas a couple of times, and fire it back up, resulting in an impressive bang out the tailpipe. It was (and still is) a good way to blow a head gasket.
Wars are won using a hundred strategies, thousands of tactics.
Just is but one.
No having fun! Don’t even talk about having fun! Don’t even make a JOKE about having fun! Stop it this minute or I am gonna cry! WWWWWWAAAAAA!
Lifters, whether hydraulic or solid, are inside the engine itself. Pouring something into the air intake and letting it go through the clinders will never even get close to them.
NO! The rolling coal they are discussing is rolling black smoke out of a vehicle’s tailpipe. You should call dating your black lady...LOVE!
:-)
