The U.S. Navy has promoted Vice Adm. Michelle Howard to admiral, making her the first female four-star officer in the Navy's 236-year-history, the White House said Tuesday.
Howard, who was the first African-American woman to command a Navy ship, will become vice chief of naval operations, according to her online Navy biography.
"Her historic career is taking a next step today," White House spokesman Josh Earnest said.

Because there is no way in hell that a woman, especially a black woman, could ever possibly succeed on her merits alone. Right? Just can't be done.
Agreed. Plus Patton.
It’s possible. But in the 0bama Administration, I’ll take bets.
Sure.
No one rises to the 4 star level in 22 years. That doesn’t mean she isn’t good. It does mean, however, that she hasn’t paid her dues.
Any general officers appointed to flag rank after the Korean War generally fall into the political brackets.
Patton, Hap Arnold, Vandegrift, Howlin Mad Smith, and many of their contemporaries were leaders in one form or another who rose to their ranks by being competent and ready in a time of need. Others like MacArthur, MacClellan, Pickett,Sickels, were political appointee/self-promoters of the same nature as most of today’s generals.
How about 32 years? She was USNA, class of 1982.

They ranged from Logistics to Electronic Warfare. Always described as down to earth guys. Really good people. They weren't leaders, they were administrators.
Mind you he wasn't putting them down. They were very competent at their jobs.
I met a Leader/ General about twenty years ago. His response to a direct order was "F#@ck the Whitehouse! We're doing it my way, because it's the right way! A$$holes in DC have no idea what we're facing here."
Wound up with a second star.
32 years. The following strikes me as a fast rise through the ranks. That’s represents 35 fast track years to 010, and she’s there at 32. So she’s still faster than fast.

Condi Rice, upon entering Bush’s Cabinet.
Not so much her accomplishments while there, but before, she was great.
So quit implying that I’m racist or sexist.
I’m pointing out that leftists are racist and sexist. They promote based on race and sex.
Look at similar positions in other services. Vice Chief of Staff of the Army was commissioned in 1979 and has been in his position for over a year. Vice Chief of Staff for the Air Force was commissioned in 1980 and made four stars in 2012. Vice Commendant of the Coast Guard was commissioned in 1982 and assumed his four star office last May. It doesn’t look like her rise was all that exceptional when compared with four star peers.
What ever would give me reason to imply that?
It is precisely Affirmative Action that calls into question every black’s and every woman’s advancement.
If Government didn’t force racism and sexism with Affirmative Action, then there would be no question about promotions. They would be based on competence.
But leftist’s racism and sexism forever pollute the possibility that someone rose on their own merits.
Whatever.
Glad I don’t know you in real life. Yuck.
To some people, yes.
If Government didnt force racism and sexism with Affirmative Action, then there would be no question about promotions. They would be based on competence.
And your assumption is that competence couldn't possiblyue have entered into it with women?
But leftists racism and sexism forever pollute the possibility that someone rose on their own merits.
Again, among some people yes.
Ditto. Though I do know a lot of people like you.
Howard was born to former U.S. Air Force master sergeant Nick Howard and his British wife Phillipa. She is married to Wayne Cowles, a retired U.S. Marine... who, btw, is white... i see that no children are mentioned... which is probably some of why she was able to achieve so much...
No children are mentioned. This little fact is very sad. How many women today feel that motherhood is an inconvenience, or worse, an obstacle to their career ambitions.
