CNN is reporting that the USS Bataan is being sent to the Persian Gulf with 1,000 marines on board. There is no word of a planned invasion. That will make seven warships there -- the USS Arleigh Burke, the USS Truxton, the USS Gunston Hall, the USS George HW Bush, the USS O'Kane, the USS Philippine Sea, and the USS Mesa Verde -- along with helicopters and warplanes that can be used for an invasion or for an evacuation of US citizens.
There have been US drones flying over Iraq for several days, but now it's been confirmed that the drones are armed with Hellfire missiles to provide air support and force protection in case the 180 or so US military advisors currently in Baghdad come under attack. CNN and Politico

The submarine evaded detection so effectively that the United States requested a 12-month extension on its lease, in order to continue performing the joint exercises. In July 2007, the HMS Gotland left San Diego to return to Sweden.
"To put it simply, if naval exercises in the last two decades involving foreign diesel-electric submarines had been actual combat, most if not all, U.S. aircraft carriers would be at the bottom of the ocean: as many as 10 U.S. aircraft carriers have been reported sunk in these exercises.
Both China and Iran now possess that missile.
Moreover, the Sunburn has been supplanted by the significantly faster and even lower-flying SS-N-27 Sizzler, also now in the possession of China and Iran.
The threat to our fleet from advanced weapon systems is very real.
Ships in exercises are lost all the time. It’s the military practicing... what happens in “... scenario”.
The Navy has a great track record given all ships that have come in and left.
I never said it was not a “real threat”. I just said they are not vulnerable as was being implied.
“Chinese” and “state of the art used” used in the same sentence is an oxymoron.
The Iranians are not suicidal. Now there maybe some radicals within their government, but I’m talking about the entire country. The Russians and China are working with Iran too.
“Okay and how many U.S. Navy ships have been sunk in the last 50 years?”
Hundreds of ships were sunk just prior tot that. WWII proved that even the most massive of firepower is not enough.
Yes so the Navy has come a long way since ancient history. Ho
I would say they are close to batting 1000 percent. You can’t get much better than that.
“I would say they are close to batting 1000 percent. You cant get much better than that.”
They’ve never been attacked like they were in WWII, so, no, they haven’t batted 1000, they simply haven’t even played such a game since.
While the technology of the Navy is amazing so is the technology of our enemies. Russia could sink every major Navy ship and sub within 30 minutes. 30 minutes. That’s it.
Hey , it worked so well in Beirut before.
Send in unarmed troops, works like a snap everytime.
didn’t know there was a new TOMMY T
The carrier story is BS and has been debunked many times.
You no doubt are very confident and feel that our capital ships can easily fend off a barrage of missiles and asymmetrical weapons. However do wonder just what senior naval officers really thought about ordering those big blue water ships into the narrow Gulf. Apparently they must agree with you since there have been no known resignations based on principle. Let’s hope for the sake of all those brave young sailors, you are right.
Thank God! And thanks for telling me. I could believe almost anything of this crew.
