Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said in Damascus on Saturday that his country will not remain passive as jihadists push an offensive in Syrias neighbor Iraq.
Russia will not remain passive to the attempts by some groups to spread terrorism in the region, Ryabkov told journalists after meeting with President Bashar al-Assad.
Sunni militants, led by the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) which is active in both Syria and Iraq, have seized vast territory north and west of Baghdad since launching their offensive two weeks ago.

Russia recognize there is a rare strategic opportunity to slaughter their most determined jihadist enemies. ISIL fighters are greatly overextended on Iraq. Their rear supply bases are being harassed by Hezbollah and Syrian air attacks. Their center flank faces ferocious Kurds who are anxious to seize more territory. Their southern thrust against Baghdad has for now been stopped by the Iraqi army bolstered by enthusiastic Shi’ite militia. The Russians know that with proper leadership, coordination and logistics, the ISIL could be placed in a deadly vise.
Russia is very well aware of the implications having the “Ring of Fire” at their southern borders. Funding Shias balances out the Sunnis.
Could ISIS be the germ of Armageddon???
