VENICE, FL (CNN) " A 73-year-old veteran says he was fired from a Cracker Barrel restaurant for giving a needy man a few condiment packets and a corn muffin.
He admits it was against the restaurants rules, but says he thinks it was the right thing to do.

LOL. They’re turning him into Cary Grant in “To Catch A Thief”! So silly.
But you can’t like this is the time before it happens because it usually isn’t and by making a big deal out of it you could force it. And they gave the press release when things started. Which is really all they could do, show it’s justified, then shut up and let it blow over.
After our super-sociable brunch at the local (and conservative) Cracker Barrel, we adjourned a couple blocks away to my clubhouse for an afternoon of fun, desserts, liquid refreshments, nonstop freeptalk, doorprizes....with a song or two by our great freeper songstress, I Still Care.......not to mention the musical interludes and vocals provided by you, Bushbacker, on guitar along with Old Sarge on the dulcimer. Our talented freeper guys and our freeper doll really rock!
What a fun day!

Whether they followed company policy or not, CB is still not a place I think much of-I pointed out that out here, food establishments share/give away stuff at the end of the business day-it was no different when I was a kid and lived in a different BFE.
If it is allowed where CB is, do they ever give leftover stuff away at the end of the day? If they can’t that is one thing-but if the rules allow giving it away, then they are as mean-minded as anyone who would rather throw away something than see someone else make use of it. That is almost sinful, in my opinion-unchristian at the least.
It looks like people are much more decent and generous here in BFE, even though everyone has a lot less to be generous with...
Freeping is fun. From WPB in 2000, to NPR in 2014. We have and do make a difference.

Agree, he broke the rules. They did the right thing.
For what it’s worth department:
Cracker Barrel spokesperson provided the following statement:
During the time he was employed, he violated the companys policies regarding consuming food
without paying or giving away free food, on five separate occasions.
Mr. Koblenzer received multiple counselings and written warnings reminding him about
the companys policies and the consequences associated with violating them.
Cracker Barrel is grateful for and honors Mr. Koblenzers service to our country as we
honor all service men and women and their families.
****
Koblenzer says hes not angry. Its a rule. They legally can do this because I did break
the rule. I completely forgot about it. I am a host at Cracker Barrel with a little
above minimum wage job.
end snips
I don’t have the food service savvy for that, thanks, and I already have work that I enjoy. I don’t have the bucks or the desire to own restaurants, either. But I would not be clueless to PR like CB has been-at least twice.
You seem to think many of us aspire to own restaurant chains, and that we wouldn’t know how to manage PR and company policies, if we did-not everyone wants to do that, or set imaginary policy.

It sounds as if the job requirements were beyond his capabilities. Maybe he should apply at Costco.
I take it they do not have a fee employees pay if they eat food-referred to around here as a “grazing fee”, and it makes sense...
It might not be the most tactful thing to insult the man’s abilities-that does not appear to be what this is about.
I think this is still about CB’s lack of PR savvy not to mention draconian appearing policies. Based on that, if an employee let a non-customer come inside in a snowstorm would they be summarily executed?
the mans abilities-that does not appear to be what this is about.
I'm thinking it is, LOL!
Policies such as "Don't steal food"?
I doubt that would situation would come up in Venice, FL.
Ignoring/making excuses about the knowledge of rules has nothing to do with intelligence or abilities-other than the ability to dissemble-it doesn’t merit insult.
It appears draconian because of the penalties-not the policy or rule itself.
True, Venice, Italy, around 1400 or so would make more sense, but Florida isn’t immune to craziness, either.
Since there are no homeless people or pets hiding in the woods that I can see, I’m going feed the appropriate food to my Husky and 3 ungrateful shelter cats, fix salad with my own veggies and leftover chicken and guiltlessly enjoy it...
Also a problem with the grammar:
“He admits it was against the restaurants rules,” Guess they’re not teaching how to punctuate possessives, either. Atrotious.
It’s also not said — were these maybe muffins that some other diner had left untouched, which they can’t serve to somebody else and would go in the trash. However that would risk getting the place in trouble if someone claimed to have caught something awful from the muffin.
It would have been better for him to just buy the muffins. Surely losing his job wasn’t worth $10 for muffins.
Aw, if people couldn’t pride themselves with irrelevant personal attacks, where would all the legitimate joy of FR BE?
/great sarc
hehe
Apostrophe’s are for plural’s. I’m sure that’s part of Common Core now.
