Sudanese woman Meriam Ibrahim now 'safe and well' in US embassy

The husband of a Sudanese Christian woman facing threats after her apostasy death sentence was overturned has expressed relief that the family has been given refuge at the US embassy in Khartoum.

"Really, it's good," Daniel Wani, the American husband of Meriam Ibrahim, told Agence France-Presse by telephone on Friday, adding that embassy staff had been "very helpful and very nice".

He said his wife and two children, who could be heard in the background, were doing well at the heavily guarded facility.

Ibrahim, 27, went to the US embassy on Thursday after being detained at Khartoum airport as she tried to leave Sudan. Her arrest came days after her release from death row.

Wani confirmed they had sought the embassy's protection because of death threats against his wife.

A US state department spokeswoman, Marie Harf, said the family were in a safe location and Sudan's government had assured the US of their continued safety.

Ibrahim was detained with her husband and two young children at Khartoum airport on Tuesday over allegations she had forged travel documents. But she was discharged from a police station, on the condition she remained in Sudan, after the government came under pressure from foreign diplomats.

Ibrahim, whose father was Muslim but who was raised by her Christian mother, was last month convicted of apostasy and sentenced to hang. She was also sentenced to 100 lashes for adultery after a court ruled her marriage to Wani, a Christian, was invalid.

I always wonder if this is a mistranslation. The punishment specified in sharia for adultery is stoning to death, for man or woman.

The punishment for fornication by an unmarried person, male or female, is 100 lashes.

So did the court really sentence her for fornication, and the reporters just don't know the difference? Or is the court made up of idiots?

I think they did because they don’t consider the marriage between a Muslim and a Christian as a real marriage. Hence, fornication.

The Sudanese Muslims INSIST that she is still Muslim even when she OPENLY stated that she is Christian and refuses to recant.

That is the burden converts in Islamic countries face. Conversion is NOT ALLOWED.

In the case of Meriam, she was deemed Muslim by virtue of her father’s religion even after he abandoned her after she was born.

Heck this “great” leader of ours isn’t even doing a d**n thing for the Marine Sgt. languishing in a Mexican jail for simply making a wrong turn south of the border.

I agree. But the press is unanimously reporting the offense as adultery, not fornication. I'm vague on how it is even possible to commit adultery if neither you nor your partner is married.

So is the press confused or the court?

This may be "better" news, but certainly not "good" news.

She and her family are still prisoners, perhaps in a more gilded cage, but prisoners, nonetheless.

How and when they will get out of the embassy safely are now the $64,000 questions!

I’m relieved to read this. I didn’t think that brave woman had much chance of survival.

Oops! You’re correct. I accidentally wrote down their ranking. Not a significant difference though, eh?
