It seems as though the racist accusations have turned on First Lady Michelle Obama after she made a grammar gaffe on Monday while speaking about part-time job salaries. Unlike when she inappropriately slanders someone or something for being racist, in her recent offending comments she was in fact acting the part.
The First Lady used the word gypped while describing the earnings for part-time jobs, with specific regard to when she herself was a working mother as an ABC news reporter at the White House Summit on Working Families. The remark is now drawing some criticism from media outlets for the racial slur.

This is ridiculous. If you’ve ever been to Europe the Gypsies are like parasites (yes, they are over Paris too). I can’t believe I’m defending Michelle Obama.
I don't agree. Gypped always meant cheated. The travelers had the reputation of offering a service, but shortchanged you by trickery. Jewed down meant you lost in a bartering session; no cheating, just raw negotiating.
So you think gyp is to gypsy as chink (Hole) is to a Chainman? Too bad they took analogies out of the SAT's.
I doubt that honest Gypsies would deny that larceny has been a major occupation of a significant percentage of them.
And everyone who makes fun of Moochelle is called a racist. hee hee
They came from India about a thousand years ago (proof from DNA testing etc), and went to various European countries. They are also one of two groups Hitler wanted to completely eliminate. They like the Jews, are still despised in Europe.
despised....however in their case the negative stereotypes are largely true.
How about “welshed” ?
“The use of this term is sometimes considered offensive because it implies a negative stereotype of the Welsh.”
Only sometimes, though! That’s white of them.
Naaa....just scotched the deal. :))
Yeah, when was she a reporter?
It’s really hard to believe there are folks who want to let Mowebama off the hook for a racist slip...
We all know perfectly well that if a Republican had said it, they would hammer him mercilessly and continuously...
The likely reason you didn't know is that it is not. Virtually any word can be a racial slur in the minds of small-minded people.
One can learn a lot from Free Republic but this isn't one of them.
“I did not know ~gypped~ was a racial slur”
We grew up using that term and never knew where it came from. But then, we handled our own bullies back then, too. We didn’t whine about everyone else.
Akin does not mean exactly equivalent. It means essentially similar, or related.
I simply meant to explain where the controversy comes from. I don’t think anyone who makes the statement “he Jewed my down” means to imply simple negotiating. It is a pejorative term. However I also don’t think most people who say that mean to be anti-Semitic either.
Dennis Prager, a prominent Jew, has told the story many times on the air of an old friend who used the term right to Dennis’ face. It was not meant hurtfully, and the guy did not even connect the word to the Dennis at all. It was just something one said without thinking, like “Indian giver,” or “going Dutch.”
I doubt if ten percent of those saying “gypped” are even aware of any connection the word has to any specific group of people.
When I was a kid, my grandmother used the threat of, “I’ll give you to the Gypsies if you don’t behave.” Gypsies are Hungarian/Romanian nomad grifters that have roamed the world for hundreds of years.
Wow! Talk about a stinging rebuke!
:0)
If ever anyone was prejudiced and I suppose bigoted, it was George Henry Borrow's Romany. Today, having been "protected" by the politically correct, by being called "travellers" they are thus lumped in with others. People who live off the taxpayer and plague neighbourhoods. Fortunately the record keeping by census since 1841 every ten years, identifies imposters claiming Gypsy heritage.
