Many cereals, snack bars and other foods tout that theyre fortified with vitamins and minerals, but it turns out, adding that into food may be dangerous, according to a new report by the Environmental Working Group. The organization found that nearly half of kids 8 or younger consume potentially dangerous levels of vitamin A, zinc and niacin due to over-fortification.
The researchers fortified 1,550 cereals and 1,000 snack bars and found that 114 had 30 percent or more of the adult daily value for some vitamins and minerals, which can cause liver damage, skeletal abnormalities, hair loss and more in kids.
"Heavily fortified foods may sound like a good thing, but it when it comes to children and pregnant women, excessive exposure to high nutrient levels could actually cause short or long-term health problems," Renee Sharp, EWG's research director and co-author of the report, said in a statement. "Manufacturers use vitamin and mineral fortification to sell their products, adding amounts in excess of what people need and more than might be prudent for young children to consume."
It’s easy, eat real food instead of processed crap.
I am not advocating any regulation, btw, if people choose to eat crap, that’s their business.
Vitamin A may be a special case of dangerous. Mmmm... nutrition bars... it’s good if it tastes like clay.
LOL!
I agree!
Now think of how many times in a long lifetime they reverse themselves on food recommendations!
You took the words right off of my keyboard. I agree 100%
does anyone besides me find this hilarious. they are constantly publishing studies,(funded i’m sure by big pharma), which apparently show that taking supplements is either worthless or bad, yet the fda either requires fortification or allows it of foods eaten in unknown daily quantities.
too funny
Scientists keep on embarrassing themselves.
They know it too, and the ultimate recommendation usually ends up being to keep your diet varied so that you don’t get too much of any one thing.
The headline on their article is sure a wonderful target
“How Much is Too Much?”.....they have to ask .....
One person’s “crap” is another’s delicacy.
You’ll find those who preach that refined flour is a dire sin.
Has anyone ever heard of this group?
I imagine a world in which there is no FDA, or IRS, or EPA, or DOE, or DHS, or DOT, or a dozen other federal moneypit agencies.
If I were king, I would shrink government by a factor of four tomorrow.
niacin
Well we could have another epidemic of Plegia....
Yeah. Cereals and snack bars have no nutritional value other than making people fat so the addition of vitamins allows them to be called nutritional. I mean, eat the stuff if you like it, but don't kid yourself that it's good for you.
Margarine? Butter!
Canola oil? olive oil!
Red meat? Chicken now fish! Now red meat does not cause heart disease!
White bread? Natural grains now glutin (sp?) free!
I think I saw a new food pyramid and it was upside down!
How did I ever live so long?
WARNING: Life may be dangerous and invariably ends in death - TAKE APROPRIATE MEASURES.
And the studies they have done, were animal feeding studies not people feeding studies.
Severe chronic lack of, say, a vitamin can produce problems. The body has ways of working around mild to moderate “malnutrition.”
It might be better to wolf down some bacon and eggs than a bowl of cereal.
Pelegra............
All I needed to know to see if the article is worth reading.
