The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has excommunicated a prominent backer of ordination of women priests, her advocacy group has said.
Kate Kelly, founder of Ordain Women, was notified of the ruling on Monday, a day after a trial by judges in the Mormon Church, Ordain Women said.
The group said the Mormon Church hierarchy deemed her an apostate for her contravention of Church doctrine.
The Utah-based Mormon religion boasts more than 15 million members worldwide.
According to a letter informing her of her excommunication obtained by the Deseret News, a leading Utah newspaper, Ms Kelly will be barred from some acts of church worship for at least a year.
"You are entitled to your views, but you are not entitled to promote them and proselyte others to them while remaining in full fellowship in the Church," wrote Bishop Mark Harrison of Virginia.
She can be readmitted to the fold if she shows "true repentance", including ceasing "teachings and actions that undermine the Church, its leaders, and the doctrine of the priesthood", he wrote. 'Tragic day'
Ms Kelly said the church's decision, taken by an all-male panel of judges, was "exceptionally painful".

I think you are letting your theological objections to Mormonism color your thinking. There is nothing un-American or unconstitutional about a religious organization ex-communicating a member over a theological dispute.
Criticize their theology all you want, but they are well within their rights.
John is heading for excommunication and Rock has been informed he must shut down his blog or he will be tried and he has no intention of doing so.
Others have gotten threats and resigned, or had their Temple Recommends taken away and it is driving many to resignation as well.
But it isn’t theological debate, they have voilated their own Handbook of instructions in at least 12 points, lied to the public about who is behind this purge and her only ‘crime’ is not shutting up but standing for what she believes and that has historical precedent in the LDS church. She is a problem that must be silenced and they are holding eternity over her head. That is UnAmerican (there is no freedom of speech or thought in Mormonism) and very Un Christian (of course we all know Mormons aren’t Christians but they claim to be).

Now there is no freedom of speech as it relates to private organizations, however by violating their own rules (the CHoI) they are guilty of defamation, false light, and libel for falsely accusing her of several things. If this affects her ability to perform her job (as a civil rights lawyer) or has other negative impacts on her they can and should be held responsible.
BTW, in cased you missed it, the LDS church was caught lying about her and the role of the leadership in SLC in her excommunication.

Since you don’t believe in the tenant of the LDS faith, then it should not bother you that she is no longer a member of the LDS Church. I would think that you would rejoice and try to convince her to join your faith instead of expending your time responding to my posts. I’m sure you could find her contact info one way or another.
