The U.S. should elect a female president "as soon as possible," first lady Michelle Obama said Monday.
"You know, I think this country is ready this country is ready for anyone who can do that job," the first lady said while speaking at a working families summit in Washington.
Obama said the country had learned a president didn't need to have a particular race, gender, or background. "The person who should do the job is the person who is most qualified and we have some options, don't we?" Obama said, drawing loud applause.
While the first lady's comments fell short of an endorsement, they're sure to be read as a nod toward the Democratic presidential primary, where former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is widely considered the frontrunner for the nomination.
The White House has steadfastly refused to wade into speculation about the 2016 presidential race, with Vice President Joe Biden also likely to compete for the nomination.
Last month, President Obama said Clinton would be a "very effective" president if she were to run but also made a point to mention his vice president.
"I know that if she were to run for president, I think she'd be very effective at that," he during an appearance on "Live with Kelly and Michael." "I've been blessed to have some people around me like her, and Vice President Biden, and my chief of staff who are just great, hardworking effective people and I love them to death."
But the first lady says she knows one person who won't be on the ballot in 2016: herself.
Asked about her post-presidential plans, Obama said whatever she decided to do "definitely will not be" political in nature.
"It will be mission-based and it will be service focused," Obama said.
Because an ‘affirmative’ action hire for the job already really worked out for us, didn’t it?
“”The person who should do the job is the person who is most qualified...’
well that’s nice of Michelle to say so, but unfortunately, the American people weren’t able to judge beforehand whether her own husband was ‘most qualified’ because things like his college transcripts and other pertinent details about his life that should have been common knowledge were, and remain, under lock and key with the complicity of the Dem Party. So pardon me, Michelle, if I smile just a bit at the audacity of you and your husband.
Bill Clinton was the first black President and Obama is the first female.
zerO put mooch on the same level as Biden and Valerie Jarrett
I could give a rats behind what Mooooochelle ever says and IF (a BIG word) there ever was to be a female POTUS, its sure as hell would not be her. I hope she over eats herself to death.
“Michelle Obama: U.S. should elect a female puppy as president ‘as soon as possible’”
You know, a qualified puppy.
I think she’s setting the ground work too - the zer0’s want to keep the presidential perks.
You know, now that I think about it, this may be the most honest thing Michelle has ever said.
Imagine the public catfights between mooshelle and hitlary.
And who will the media side with?
Puts them in an interesting position.
This lying witch would NOT back Palin 2016, Bachman 2016, or other women on the right. Same with black conservative candidate.
Identity politics only matter when you serve THE party.
What’s she got against a Hispanic president first? Is she racist?
Aunt Ester's younger sister has spoken.
As much as I want to see a conservative elected in 2016, I know he would inherit and be accused of causing all the problems created by Obama. And by then, they will be many.
Instead of worrying about what’s between the next President’s legs, we should be concerned about what’s between his/her ears.
A barrel of diseased feces, like her husband ?
Moochell would like to see an overweight, clumsy, liar, criminal, and gender confused woman to sit in the oval orifice.
Does she mean Hillary or herself?
