I actually did see the Bundy standoff as a turning point. A huge one. I believe the government knows there are tens of millions of americans that, had it ended up with shots fired, would have possibly participated in a “critical mass” event resulting in actual civil war.
They had no choice but to back off, but only because the timing was not right. They will prepare. They will push again, but next time they will be prepared, or at least believe they are.

Here’s my take: Every federal alphabet-soup agency now has it’s own paramilitary police force. Prior to this augmentation, these agencies relied on state or local law enforcement — often the local Sheriff’s Office. Your local sheriff would be more likely to question rather than automatically enforce it. Methods would be moderated at the very least.
