“At least there’s some consistency in Russian foreign policy. Putin opposes Sunni jihadis in Syria, and now in Iraq.”

You are 100% correct, and I’ll tell you why in 3 words. Uzbecks and Khazaks.

Nasty sods, they are. Got bitten by the Jihadi bug hard and Putin does not want them messing around in the re-invigorated USSR. The more that head to Syria or Iraq or Afghanistan and get killed, the happier he is.

As stated, it’s a proxy war, but not particularly aimed at the USA in this case. Why should he bother? It’s not as if the Worm will ever stand up to Putin.

Precisely....

And upon what basis will we then oppose Russia sending troops to aid the Iraqi PM in his fight against Obama supported Sunni jihadi’s in Iraq now that we have painted them as “evil bad guys”.

This is bizzare....

~I think Washington and Moscow both are interested in beating Beijing to the punch, and, in that way, sometimes their interests overlap. Just sayin’….~

Not true. US foreign policy was extremely pro-Chinese since about 1970s and also anti-Russian, even after Cold War.
And it is spectacular that US can’t hold any ground it has strugled from the Russians in the last 20 years.
Central Asia is a primary example. US has effectively defeated Russian influence there but hasn’t gained any of it’s own. It is China who filled a gap.
In my opinion there is no American interest in that happened there.

I can’t think of a better ploy than to lure Putin deep into that whole mess

Putin laughs at Obozo’s reset and initiates his own reset of the Soviet Union.

Obama plays checkers. Putin plays chess.

The problem is I don't think Obama is smart enough to play checkers even.

The US could have been energy independent and out of that god-forsaken part of the world years ago if we only had the Will.

Russia was helping Iran with nuclear facilities and other weapons over 10 years ago. Russia armed Israel’s enemies for the Six Day War and instigated the War. A few years ago, Iranian leaders promised nuclear equipment to Syria.

"Wow, who saw this coming?"

Most folks have little interest in it, as long as they aren't being affected this moment. Many others who follow politics and foreign policy are not honest enough with themselves or others to see what's coming (only concerned with what they themselves can have now without regard for consequences). Many more honest people saw it coming.

Evil ones will read the truth and slide further into evil thoughts and reactions.

Obama plays checkers. Putin plays chess.

And Persians invented chess

but>>>>

The precursors of chess originated in India during the Gupta Empire,[2][3][4][5] where its early form in the 6th century was known as chaturaṅga, which translates as "four divisions (of the military)": infantry, cavalry, elephantry, and chariotry, represented by the pieces that would evolve into the modern pawn, knight, bishop, and rook, respectively.[6]

Chess was introduced to Persia from India
