It's early morning and local commuters are queuing up for tickets at the Kirti Nagar railway station in the Indian capital, Delhi.
Along the tracks, another crowd is gathering - each person on his own, separated by a modest distance. They are among the 48% of Indians who do not have access to proper sanitation.
Coming from a slum close-by, they squat among the few trees and bushes along the railway tracks and defecate in the open.
To many, this is a daily morning ritual despite the hazards of contracting diseases such as diarrhoea and hepatitis.
It can be even more hazardous for women since each time a woman uses the outdoors to relieve herself, she faces a danger of sexual assault.
Recently two teenage girls from the state of Uttar Pradesh were gang-raped and found hanging from a tree after they left their village home to go to the toilet. Their house, like hundreds of millions of others in the country, did not have any facilities. 'No privacy'
A new World Health Organisation (WHO) report says more than half a billion people in India still "continue to defecate in gutters, behind bushes or in open water bodies, with no dignity or privacy".

We criticize the muzzies for living in the 7th Century. It looks like a lot of India hasn't even advanced to the AD era yet. They're still living in the deep BC.
Because they are po’ed about the Washington Redskins name? Oh, wait ... Indians ... nevermind /Latella
The poverty in India for the lower classes is breathtaking.
That’s why nomatter where you go over there it stinks no matter how much perfume they use to try to hide it.
All cultures are equal! These people are simply misunderstood and they need to be encouraged to keep doing what they are doing. If this started happening in the US, they would designate public areas for people to freely crap in, while raises taxes to hire law enforcement to protect them from harassment.
Thank god they kicked the Brits out. Now they can be civilized.
Just providing sanitation and water for the masses is not a solution. Must be a comprehensive plan, or they will overpopulate at an even worse pace.
If you give high things to low people, they destroy them.
If you take high things from high people, they replace them.
What's breathtaking is the indifference of the corrupt ruling elites to the lives of the peasants. India is one of those countries that could use a good old-fashioned Bastille-type revolution, complete with the guillotining of the entire upper class. They have been robbing the country blind via regulatory corruption, and plain old theft, while telling the poor they're so much better off than they were under British rule.
Because they don’t have bathrooms?
If they would ease off on their concentration on multiplying like rabbits and think about how to bring themselves into the modern world, they wouldn’t be doing this.
I was in the U.S. Army serving in Seoul, Korea in 1961-62 and I saw the same thing. I haven’t been there since but I understand that South Korea is now a modern, industrialized nation. I would bet any amount of money that they don’t do that anymore.
It speaks volumes about the Indian civilization.
Good thing we’re not competing with them for jobs.
A friend of mine visited India on a business trip and was shocked to see someone squat and take a dump on the sidewalk near a busy street. That’s 3rd world style.
Even Indians complain about the smell.
But I work at a Ag school so I am used to the smell.
India is an odd place, so much poverty, and so many brilliant, industrious people. They also are very pro-Israel. If we are to lose our status, I wish we had made India the next superpower instead of China.
Well said.
A while back there was an article about 30,000 people applying for 3 jobs. The jobs were for rat catchers which came with a stick and a flashlight. A high percentage of the applicants held 4 year degrees.
They also dump their dead in the rivers. So you have corpses floating and decomposing in the same places these people go to bathe, brush teeth, drink, and of course go bathroom.
Only the best socialist govt can do keep things this screwed up.
India pretends to be a democracy. In reality, it's a corrupt tyranny that crushes free enterprise while building minimal infrastructure. India's elites are adept at pissing on their inferiors while convincing them that it's raining. And they do this no matter which political party is elected to office.
Because they can?
