Why do millions of Indians defecate in the open?
BBC ^ | 6/16/2014

It's early morning and local commuters are queuing up for tickets at the Kirti Nagar railway station in the Indian capital, Delhi.

Along the tracks, another crowd is gathering - each person on his own, separated by a modest distance. They are among the 48% of Indians who do not have access to proper sanitation.

Coming from a slum close-by, they squat among the few trees and bushes along the railway tracks and defecate in the open.

To many, this is a daily morning ritual despite the hazards of contracting diseases such as diarrhoea and hepatitis.

It can be even more hazardous for women since each time a woman uses the outdoors to relieve herself, she faces a danger of sexual assault.

Recently two teenage girls from the state of Uttar Pradesh were gang-raped and found hanging from a tree after they left their village home to go to the toilet. Their house, like hundreds of millions of others in the country, did not have any facilities. 'No privacy'

A new World Health Organisation (WHO) report says more than half a billion people in India still "continue to defecate in gutters, behind bushes or in open water bodies, with no dignity or privacy".

Not to worry. Given their practice of sex-selection abortion, in a couple of generations there will be too few women for population growth, and the healthiest women will be employed as rental-wombs by Western homosexuals.

Just as in the similar case in China, it will be interesting (from a safe distance) to see how this works out for them.

“India is one of those countries that could use a good old-fashioned Bastille-type revolution, complete with the guillotining of the entire upper class.”

The problem is religious and cultural, not political. It doesn’t matter who is in charge. They’re all Hindus and therefore don’t give a damn about human beings beneath them. The grinding poverty is what the “peasants” deserve according to Hindu culture.

This is why so many Hindus fear the Dalits becoming Catholics:

http://www.catholic.org/news/international/asia/story.php?id=27995

http://www.ucanews.com/story-archive/?post_name=/1995/03/28/catholic-church-in-orissa-reaffirms-commitment-to-dalits-and-tribals&post_id=47032

The Catholic Dalits know Christianity changes EVERYTHING: http://campaigns.ahrchk.net/jjpallath/mainfile.php/hnews/56/

As long as the Dalits are Hindus they will have little voice - Hinduism says their lot is their lot because of a former life. As Christians, however, especially Catholic Christians, they know their rights, know they are created in God’s image, and demand change. Hence, the persecution of Dalit Christians by Hindu elites.

The pioneers in America numbered far, far fewer than the multitudes currently in India, so applying that ratio is not a valid comparison, IMHO.

We can compare them to the European immigrants in New York City in the early 20th century, then, as NYC was already quite populated. Having a large family is not "multiplying like rabbits", because human beings are not rabbits. In our church, the "H" family has 12 children, the "S" family has 11 children, the other "S" family has 12 children (they cheated, triplets were thrown in), the "B" family has 12 children, and numerous other families have 8 or 9 children. They come from working to professional class, and I would dare you to tell them they are "breeding like rabbits."

For a poor family, children may be the only precious treasure they have. The people defecating in the streets in India aren't doing it because it is crowded, or because they have large families. In fact, the Netherlands are more crowded than India is. Paul Ehrlich, and all the lefties, were so wrong about India and the causes of the poverty there.

I travel quite a bit. Many of the hotels are owned and run by Indians.

A few have been as you describe, but most are either run of the mill or above average.

The worst hotel I ever stayed at was run by “white Americans.”

I did one of the dumb “what country should you live in” things on facebook, and came up with India. I demurred, that I agreed with H.L. Mencken, I’d trade you the Acropolis for an American bathroom. In this case, make it the Taj Mahal.

You forgot the Caste system, which sentences people to their lot in life at birth.

Imagine the FLIES landing on your food & face.

Obviously, Indians have become somewhat immune to fecal related diseases. Good for them. I’d probably get sick within a week of being there. The smell alone would sicken me.

Train rides must be vomit inducing.

Some cultures are definitely better than others, both for the people & the land they inhabit.

Why do hundreds of “Journalism” schools graduate people too stupid to grasp the concept of a shortage of public toilet facilities?

"Because they don’t have bathrooms?"

Have you seen bathrooms in these countries? They poop in a hole in the floor.

My brother & his family were stationed in Tehran, Iran in the mid 1970s, returning to the US only months before the Hostage Crisis.

My mom & aunt visited them there. They saw several men squat in their white robes in the river & defecate. Down stream, women were busily washing clothes in the river.

Have you seen bathrooms in these countries?

No, I haven't. As much as possible, I avoid places where the bathroom facilities aren't as decent as at my house.

Here - enjoy.

Bear in mind that for every woman’s public bathroom there are 50 men’s, despite the fact men can “siphon the python” behind any tree or wall discreetly.

There are a number of startups in India building public toilets that collect waste, use extremeophile bacteria to break it down quickly and create biogas. The biogas is sometimes used to generate heat for hot water so members can do laundry, power generators to charge cell phones or simply heat water to encourage sanitation. You could use the gas for cooking, but no one wants to.

LOL exactly.

I took a leak in the yard this morning because I could.’

So, like many here, you’re not house-broken yet? Or is it because you’re required to sit down?

The world wants to know.

Corporate Executives take note. You want these public crappers writing your software?

Next time I call an outsourced customer service I’ll ask ‘Where did you move your bowels today?”
