With new leadership in the House, the Obama administration thinks it may have a better chance of securing immigration reform, Valerie Jarrett says at a Monitor breakfast.
The White House is holding out hope that immigration reform can still pass this year, bucking the conventional wisdom that the issue is all but dead for now.
We have an opportunity with a new team in place in the House to act, said Valerie Jarrett, a senior adviser to President Obama, at a breakfast Friday hosted by The Christian Science Monitor.
On Thursday, House Republicans elected a new majority leader, Rep. Kevin McCarthy of California. He replaces Rep. Eric Cantor of Virginia, who is stepping down next month from his leadership position after his surprise loss on June 3 in the GOP primary. Congressman Cantors loss to a tea party-backed candidate was widely seen as dashing any remaining hopes of passing immigration reform, at least this year if not for the rest of Mr. Obamas presidency.
Ms. Jarrett rejects that idea. Cantor himself has said he did not lose his primary because of immigration reform; polls back him up. But rank-and-file GOP members may still resist acting, given accusations that Cantor favored amnesty for unlawful immigrants.

The leadership still wants it but it is harder for the rank and file to support it. If Cantor can lose they can lose if someone targets them and runs 200,000 against their 500,000. They couldnt just put a bill on the floor and get an easy 218 like they could have at one point.
Yeah, they’ll just ram it down our throats like Obamacare.
The border is open. America has been invaded, which has not happened in a hell of a long time.
Communist sucubus
Isn’t that the reason the Emperor manufactured this crisis in the first place, so he could take action with his “pen and his phone (to Mexico)”?
She Who Must Be Obeyed!
What have communist succubi ever done to deserve the comparison....
The Iranian slumlord speaks.
ROTFLOL! Best name for her I have ever seen/heard!
You just scored a ‘GOOOAAAALLLLL!”
Ehhhhhh.....Valerie is starting to come out of the shadows. She better not let sunlight hit her.
Something is wrong with the puppet. Maybe too much Choom.
Aw, I think he just insulted communist succubi.
Orenthal James Obama border nullification. He learned that lesson well. Any law he doesn’t approve of he won’t enforce it.
The left and the near-left are both spinning like crazy.
They’re both sold out.
No more immigration sell-out. And while we’re at it, bring back American jobs.
Lady you need to reduce the drug intake..........
We have a friggin INVASION occuring on our southern border and the only reform on immigration that might happen is not the one you want.........

Well stated, except Brat was outspent $5,000,000 to $200,000. But your main point is exactly right. How could ANY Republican feel safe if they came out for Amnesty now. Cantor had EVERYTHING going for him - universal name recognition, the ability to “bring home the bacon”, tons of money, a no-name opponent who was, no-doubt, looked at as a loon.
Other Republicans that try voting for Amnesty will not be so lucky - they will get a REAL CHALLENGER, with real money, and real name recognition. They won’t be as lucky as Cantor and be able to defeat their opponent so easily...oh, wait.
What nation on this planet ecept America would not call what is happening on our southern border and invasion?
Does 40,000 innocent children brought to the US/Mexico Border due to illegal promises and illegal Executive Dreamer Orders from Obama qualify Obama to be placed on the US State Departments Blacklist for Human Trafficking?
Val-Jar is finally out from behind the veil of secrecy, the real president speaks. Obama is no longer believable so Jarret must do the talking now. Things are about to get a lot more ugly out there IMHO.
