Texas Gov. Rick Perry probably shouldn't have attempted to make the case that gay people can "decide not to" be gay despite genetic predisposition, he conceded Thursday, offering no semblance of an apology but trying instead to rally attention back to his message about jobs and the economy.
"I got asked about an issue," Perry, a Republican, explained during a lunch hosted by the Christian Science Monitor. "And instead of saying, 'You know what? We need to be a really respectful and tolerant country - to everybody - and get back to talking about: Whether you're gay or straight, you need to be having a job.' And those are the focuses I want to be involved with.
"Instead," he went on, "I readily admit - I stepped right in it."
Perry was asked during an appearance in San Francisco last week whether he believes homosexuality is a disorder. He seized the opportunity to liken "the homosexual issue" with the physically debilitating disease of alcoholism.
"Whether or not you feel compelled to follow a particular lifestyle or not," he said, "you have the ability to decide not to do that. I may have the genetic coding that I'm inclined to be an alcoholic, but I have the desire not to do that. And I look at the homosexual issue the same way."
The remark, delivered during an appearance at the San Francisco Commonwealth Club, drew "murmurs of disbelief" from the audience, according to the San Francisco Chronicle, though it merely echoed a similar comparison he made in his 2008 book, "On My Honor."
It's not the first time Perry - who's currently chewing over a 2016 White House run - has "stepped in it," nor is it the first time he's turned that particular phrase.

I'd like to see some statistics on that. I think a very small percentage of them actually feel that way. It just seems to be a popular thing to do in this day and age.
Except that wasn't what he was asked.
So what. A firm reasoned response is better than ducking a question.
Because it makes the later "what I really meant was" tap dancing that much more interesting.
Yeah. That was for lurkers.
“Choice” only counts when a Murdered Baby is involved in the equation.
as an alcoholic....I am offended....I might even have a resentment building. serenity prayer....etc.
What he said was straight truth, very appropriate, and when that becomes "offensive" to a conservative, pigs will begin to fly.
*feeling sheepish*
CBS: Rick Perry “stepped right in it” comparing gays to alcoholics
Why? If it is good enough for God then it should be good enough for Perry.............
SIN is SIN. Time to be honest or shut up CBS and every other pervert promoter..........
You support perversion then step up and be honest and own it..
Why do gay people hate alcoholics so much? Isn’t drinking alcohol legal, and a personal choice? And isn’t the common wisdom that some people are genetically predisposed to drinking, and if they want they could choose to drink all the time?
So isn’t an alcoholic who decides they would rather NOT drink exactly the same as a gay person who decides they would rather NOT engage in gay sex?
And in both cases, wouldn’t the RIGHT thing to do be to allow those people to get professional help to aid them in their desire?
But apparently, gay people think badly of alcoholics, and make bigoted attacks at the comparison.
Probably the most frank, and scientifically provable statement that can be said about homosexuality outside of it’s religious context.
If Homosexuality is genetic its a diseases that should by all the laws of Darwinian evolution breed itself out of existences in just a few of generations. Thus as a diseases its generally self-terminating.
If it is a result of cultural condemnation exploring various genetic weaknesses. This it is also called a diseases because it has the same genetically fatal results.
The left can celebrate and uplift their sodomite fantasies all they want but they aren’t going to make that lifestyle and population naturally self-sustaining. Frankly the claims of the victims of this condition sound a lot more like the claims of drug addicts to need more drugs, or Alcoholic to need boose.
What the left now does in telling theses people what they want to hear while encouraging their self-destructive behavior, is slowly killing them just like feeding an Alcoholic more boose. The results may not be as imedeadly self-evidence but they are just as devastating over the long run.
God warned us about the sin of Sodomy a long time ago for very good reason, It is a pathway towards death not just for individuals and their families, but ultimately civilizations as well.
This is just the beginning, the MSM will try their best to slime Rick Perry. He wants to defend the United States (starting with Texas) and this is SO against obama’s agenda.
The difference being when Obama steps in it (which, of course, he does all the time) CBS, rather than proclaiming it, silently jockeys with the rest of the lame stream to hungrily lick Obama’s boots clean.
Every homosexual I’ve ever known has had some painfully obvious self-inflicted drama-induced mental incapacitation, for which they try to elicit sympathy, and I have zero sympathy for those who would demean manhood.
It’s like taking a stick out to the back yard, poking it around in dog crap, sticking it up your anus, and then complaining because you’ve got dirt up your anus. Earth to rump-rangers, you shouldn’t put dirt up your anus.
Who gives a crap about gays. He’s got a border to defend. We have bigger fish to fry in this country. Enough with the rainbow crap.
LOL! Gender is bestowed by Nature. The AMA thinks everything is controllable by Man.
And I am not obligated to live in their delusions. :-)
I’m getting sick and tired of polititians who make statements and then APOLOGIZE!!!!!!
The STATEMENT was true....OKAY maybe half true! GAYS AREN’T BORN that WAY in my books....but why on earth did he backpeddle? No wonder we conservatives are frustrated with would be candidates!!!!
I’m not convinced there’s a homosexual gene either. Rather than trash Perry for recanting, I see it as an issue of him being reckless with his speech in the first place. You can word things in such a way as to not be offensive, and still get your point across. This was just lame IMO. The guy is not ready for prime time IMO. Never was...
