The total number of Americans now on the Social Security Disability Insurance program topped 11 million in May, a record high and an increase of 18% since January 2009, according to new data from the Social Security administration, furthering a trend that will have severe economic and budget consequences.
More than 5.2 million workers have enrolled in the program since President Obama took office, and enrollment is climbing faster under Obama than at any time in the program's history. An average 81,000 workers joined the Social Security Disability Program each month during Obama's years. Under President Bush, by contrast, monthly enrollment averaged 66,000, and the overall average since 1975 is 52,000.
While there is debate about the exact causes of the swelling ranks of workers on disability, it's clear that the sluggish economic recovery under Obama played an important role.

Why? Sleaze balls like Morgan and Morgan.
Scampering like cockroaches finding a new “free stuff” avenue after their long term unemployment ran out.
People are giving up?
Yes. Undoubtedly. SSDI pays more than regular SS, IIRC....and all you have to do is get the minimum working quarters to qualify (40?). You can get it any time after that. So you’re in your 40s and you’re a leech. Hire Morgan and Morgan, the Cochran Firm, and any number of others to go to bat for you and you’re set for life.
SSDI and SSI (SSA administers SSI) comprised 25% of all SSA payments the last time I checked before Obama was elected. I’m guessing that number has gone up to over 30% now.
Exactly. Mining the federal benefits system is a huge legal specialty area, just check out the yellow pages.
POTUS caused PTSD
Yep, all you gotta do is watch Jerry or Maury or any of the other shows to give you an example of what Bipolar Disorder looks like (the SSDI disease du jour).
Some are doing it out of desperation, not laziness.
The left doesn’t care how they make you dependent,
just that you become dependent.
because the rats are handing it out like candy to buy votes
I’d think that ‘desperation’ entails taking a job, any job, quickly in the short term to make ends meet. SSDI takes planning and concerted effort to get. Applicants are denied outright routinely as general rule. That’s the reason for Morgan and Morgan and The Cochran Firm.
Disability has been transformed into another wealth redistribution/vote buying scheme by Obama.
When you are sucking on the government teat are you going to vote for a candidate who promises to take it away?
Absolutely. 50+, unemployed, un-entrepreneurial, with an actual mild disability for which you have been treated? Ain't nobody hiring anyway, you're going to go for it.
The Administration loves it because guess what? You are no longer "unemployed!" The real Unemployment Rate: about 13%. Young people, African-Americans: 25%. Newsflash: The Obama Administration focused on Obamacare, Gay Marriage, Muslim affairs ... not the economy.
We are in Depression II. Can we snap out of it before we absolutely run out of money for palliative federal measures? Not with this set of policies.
You would be shocked at the number of bi-polar people in this county. Whole families with adult children living at home who have never hit a lick in their lives. Subsisting on government checks and Charity handouts. Lots of job openings go begging.
I don’t agree that they didn’t focus on the economy.
They focused on destroying it.
Yes sir. Money for nothing and the chicks for free!

Looking at it, it appears the largest group is the 50-64 crowd, very much most likely to have been squeezed out of the job market - either from having their business crushed by rules and taxes, or by being replaced with younger workers. While I'm sure there's a lot of luggage on that rack as well, disability is becoming the new 'pre-retirement.' I'm also pretty sure that if you hit SS age while on disability, you get full SS benefits rather than having to wait a few years.
First they go on unemployment. Then extended unemployment. During this time, they’ve sat on their collective, er, couches and have gained weight. This weight gain brings on diseases such as diabetes, which then leads to glaucoma.
Then they go on disability.
Diagnoses of psychiatric diseases and disorders became irrelevant for me when the American Psychiatric Association ruled that homosexuality is not a psychiatric disorder.
It seems today, the only deviancy in America that is acceptable to condemn is conservatism.
