An Edmonton woman who says shes being discriminated against because she has 22 visible piercings is reigniting the debate about workplace dress codes.
Kendra Behringer, 24, complained that one prospective employer threw out her résumé in front of her, but lawyers believe her chances of establishing discrimination are slim to non-existent, while employment and image experts say businesses are entitled to set rules on how workers dress.
The [employer] is going to perhaps wonder, Will this person be able to conform to the rules that we have, or is this somebody who is more rebellious? said Diane Craig, president of Toronto-based image consultant company Corporate Class Inc.
Ms. Behringer has launched a campaign to make it illegal for employers to discriminate based on body modifications, something that would require an amendment to the Alberta Human Rights Act.
Her petition has amassed more than 200 signatures and shes looking for an MLA to put her case to the Alberta legislature, she told the Edmonton Journal.

Canada Ping!
if she could put a Masterlock on those lips-problem solved.
maybe Bammy can sign an executive order for her.
Sorry - we don’t hire the hopelessly insane.
It’s not discrimination, it is recognizing mental illness when you see it in self-mutilation behavior
Why is it more logical to bend society to the individual than for the individual to adapt to society? Does the collective have a right to establish and enforce norms?
We don’t allow this sort of thing hereabouts...
About the only job that's right for her is in a tattoo parlor. Although ironically, she will loose the battle and win the war. I suspect that in 20 years, people with multiple piercings will be in all kinds of jobs. It is a generational thing, just like facial hair, hair length and tattoos.
Barf!
Listen, I went through a “body modification” phase in college. I had piercings and tattoos. I knew damn well, however, that I wasn’t going to get a real job with earrings and visible tattoos.
There’s no “discrimination” if an employer won’t hire you because you’ve got stainless steel poking out of every part of your body. You made that CHOICE to do that to your body. Discrimination is casting someone aside for something they can’t change like their skin color or gender (which is a moot point with all the “gender normative” garbage we’re hearing as of late).
Take the damn piercings out if you want the job. Otherwise, go see if Hot Topic is hiring. Idiot.
While this is about tattoos, I’m sure there is an appropriate “piercings” poster, too.

“OK... our next applicant come in please... oh... what the... I’m sorry that position has been filled. Thank You.”
I once asked one of my son's old girlfriends about her lip piercing and she admitted my son is a restless sleeper and often hits her with his arm during sleep and it is very painful.
So I asked ... "Well ... why do you have the piercing?"
Real life answer;
I don' know.
I walked past a tattoo parlor the other day on the way to another store and was shocked to see that the VERY attractive young lady behind the counter had ZERO tattoos. First time I’d seen that.
Forcing masses to conform to the individual is another way to break down society.
No thanks.
“22 visibile piercings”
Strongly implying that she has non-visible piercings, too. I do not, repeat NOT, want to know where.
