He loses his Senate seat by a whopping 18% in a massive blowout, moves out of PA to DC to become a lobbyist then decides to run for POTUS.

Well, for someone who had no business being there, he did a lot better than most of the rest of them. He WON Iowa, and a number of other heartland states. No one ever found the kind of stuff to distract the Cain or Gingrich campaigns. He had a natural base, which Pawlnety could not claim. Perry wasn't ready. Santorum had more staying power than Bachmann. He's not the whackadoodle that Ron Paul is, and the senate election he lost was one that NONE of the others could have even won the first time.

For my part, I'm glad that I had a social conservative to vote for.

He never actually ran. He formed "exploratory committees" multiple times to pretend to contemplate running for president and collected money from donors each time.

It was a way for him to legally collect cash from people looking to access his connections.

Well....as with case with MR....(and just about everyone else for that matter)...you can find numerous instances where Santorum violated conservative orthodoxy including his support for higher minimum wage.

I been trying to tell other freepers that if they put up their favorite lightweights against Jeb and Christie its going to be just like 2012 and 2008 with McCain and Romney.

Generally speaking, I usually prefer going with a governor with a strong record of accomplishment, getting things done, and producing favorable results in his state. That is usually a good indicator of how he would do as president. I am generally wary of all beltway politicians...including folks like Santorum and Gingrich who left their home states to live there.

The beltway atmosphere is definitely corrosive to ethics and common sense.

I can see why RR like to back to his ranch (and GWB too) as often as possible when he was POTUS.

Yup. Every candidate had one. With Perry, it was Gardasil and the Texas highway project. Santorum did pretty well for a guy with no money, which usually means he didn't make the wrong friends.

Santorum worked hard, especially in Iowa, where he practically lived for year, can’t deny that. He won 11 primaries and caucuses. Gingrich won 2. MR won all of the rest. Most of the other conservative alternatives to MR simply could not get their campaigns off the ground. Perry got off to a late start and was then plagued by miserable debate performances. Cain and Gingrich were both plagued by scandals past and present. Ron Paul was simply running in the wrong party. Michele Bachmann was too much of a back bencher untried and untested. Pawlenty was little known outside his home state. Therefore, Santorum, sort of by default, sort of being the last man standing, emerged as the only viable conservative alternative to MR even though he himself was not all that viable.

I suppose you could find in almost any politician’s record an instance where they have been less than 100% perfect on the illegal immigration issue, and that includes RR unfortunately.

And who were FNC paid opinionists (subsequently suspended) when they announced their 2012 runs.

Both were booted from their last elected jobs so they both (eventually) went onto FNC to talk...BABLABLA...then the POTUS runs.

To be fair to their supporters here, the 2012 GOP POTUS field was pretty bleak.

Exactly. Unfortunately FNC has been exploited by would be presidential candidates as a vehicle for getting free air time. It has been become a revolving door gig similar to lobbying in DC.
