A commander of the al-Qaeda splinter Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) has been killed in Mosul as Iraqi forces continue slowing the militants advance.
Media reports said on Saturday that Abu Omar al-Esseily was killed in an attack against his car in the militant-held city, which is the provincial capital of the Nineveh province.
There were no immediate details about the ISIL commanders death.
Mosul, Iraqs second city, fell to the hands of the ISIL militants in a lightning advance on June 10, which followed the capture of Tikrit, located 140 kilometers (87 miles) northwest of the capital Baghdad.
Rights groups say around half a million people have been uprooted in and around Mosul.
The ISIL militants have vowed to continue their raid towards the capital Baghdad. Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki has said that the countrys security forces would confront the terrorists, calling Mosul seizure a conspiracy."
Earlier in the day, Iraqi forces took control of number of towns in Salah al-Din and Diyala provinces.
It Does.
Was not expecting ISIS/L leaders to be white Americans.
He white
My first clue this was engineered was a few days ago when they introduced their ‘10 Commandments’.
That’s a purely Christian construct, no jihadi puts restrictions on civilians they’re trying to conquer.
Their only command is ‘convert or die’.
Looks like two different people.
Let them kill each other. Let us make bets.
Go Assad!
In the News/Activism forum, on a thread titled ISIL commander attacked, killed in Iraq’s Mosul (Saddam loyalist, Bathist fugitive), txhurl pix
Red beard ..Looks Kurdish...There’s an earlier comment that they hold certain sections in Mosul not ISIS.
Hey, all the dem talking points said it would be easy to track and kill any of the prisoners obama released. Well? Why haven’t we gotten the head of this dreadful group that obama released in 2009?
