Former New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin is asking for leniency ahead of his July 2 sentencing.
New court filings say Nagin is looking at a minimum of 20 years in prison, based on federal sentencing guidelines. That's a "virtual life sentence" for the 58-year-old former two-term mayor, defense attorney Robert Jenkins wrote in a Friday filing to U.S. District Judge Ginger Berrigan asking her to hand down a lighter term.

Saying that I was as corrupt as I could and don’t be looking at Katrina and stuff - and you’re a racist if you don’t let me off easy.
Maybe he can share a cell with “da hip hop mayor” Kwame Kilpatrick.
Should have read:
Because corruption is okay in Louisiana. And if the judge gives him a 'normal' sentence, the judge is a racist [Nagin playing the RACE CARD.]
judges can’t give less than mandatory minimum sentences. i for one hope he gts a lot more. those in higher positions of trust deserve stiffer penalties when they decide to be criminals.
Don’t worry Nagin, you will gat a pardon from the clown in chief.
Don’t do the crime if you can’t do the time.
I didn’t know he was living in TX. That’s more Katrina trash that blew across the state line.
If the judge is a republican he’ll impose the appropriate sentence. If it’s a democrat judge then who knows? He could only get a few years. Very good chance that Obama pardons the piece of crap at the end of his term.
Tough hop, Ray.
Chocolate City ping!
Obama's pardon list will be long indeed.
Clinton’s pardons were an outrage — Hussein’s will be ten times as outrageous.
What difference does it make?
These guys, Nagin, Jesse Jackson III, Marion Berry, felons all, but they are Holder’s Peeps. There is always an elective office, a corporate board, or maybe a university presidency for them.
Susan Rice will get her university presidency, why not these guys? What difference does it make?
He’ll more likely get a worse sentence with a Democrat judge, and it is likely ‘teh communiteh’ will throw him under the bus - hard. In large part he is the scapegoat for the VASTLY more odious, venal and malicious Morial administration. Patsy Nagin is a windfall for them, as was the flood and loss of documents. Or post hoc loss of documents.
I know nothing about prisons and how they work, but doesn’t 20 years work down to about 7-8 years with good behavior and other such incentives....?
Nagin doesn’t deserve easy treatment. He allowed thousands of people to DIE during Katrina because he would not follow Bush’s advice and get his people out of the city BEFORE the storm.
And .. there were others in the Nagin admin who would not allow Nagin to use the school busses (because they didn’t have toilets in them) to transport people out of the city and said busses ended up getting destroyed in the storm. I think I still have a picture of those buses under water in the parking lot.
It’s just another case of a liberal being in charge who has no clue what to do. It’s criminal that so many people had to die because of his incompetence.
The Judge is Ginger Berrigan, a stalwart Democrat and a Clinton appointee. Marc Morial was the preceding mayor and an especial pet of Clinton. Morial benefits from Nagin being the scapegoat for both wretched mayoral administrations.
Look for Nagin to get close to the max, but a bit less to preserve Berrigan’s reputation as moderate and humane.
I’m calling 18 years, UNLESS Nagin has some good dirt on other Democrats. I don’t think he does, ironically because he is relatively clueless and honest by NOLA standards.
I see 18 years. 16 if he is lucky.
Off thread, but I presume you figger Guvna Jindal is a poseur?
Well isn't he special!!
Maybe he can have his dream of a chocolate prison.
