Poll: Lamar Alexander Ahead Of Primary Challenger, Under 50 Percent
breitbart.com ^ | 5/22/14 | Matthew Boyle

Sen. Lamar Alexander (R-TN) is well ahead of his Republican primary challenger but polling under 50 percent a few months ahead of his August primary, a new poll provided exclusively to Breitbart News shows.

Alexander leads Tea Party-backed state Rep. Joe Carr 44-20, the Triton Polling poll of approximately 1037 likely GOP primary voters and conducted Wednesday this week found. The poll was commissioned by Tea Party Nation.

Polling in the race has been sparse, but the new poll shows higher support for Carr and lower support for Alexander than other surveys. A February North Star Strategies poll had Alexander up 62-17 while one released last week from the same firm had Alexander up 56-14.

Alexander's approval rating in the new poll – voters who either strongly or somewhat approve of his job performance – was 57 percent approval rating.

Carr’s name ID is rising in the state. 68 percent of Tennessee GOP primary voters know Carr the poll found. Twenty percent had a positive impression of him while 8 percent had a negative impression. Thirty-eight percent had no opinion on him.

Other candidates—like Dr. George Flinn, who has been suspected of being a spoiler candidate Alexander brought in to weaken Carr’s chances—barely register in the poll.

More than 57 percent of GOP primary voters say they would either “very likely” or “likely” support a conservative challenger to Alexander, and 25 percent answered they weren’t sure when asked that question—so it seems Carr’s biggest challenge between now and election day in early August is raising his name ID. Only 14.5 percent said it was unlikely or very unlikely they’d support a conservative challenger to Alexander, while 3.4 percent said they weren’t sure or didn’t know.

I like the fewer candidates strategy.

Yes, particularly since Tennessee is a no runoff state (I believe) where whoever has a plurality of the votes wins the primary. Can anyone from TN confirm that?

No runoff. Winner take all. Open primary.

Notice the states the last 8 on your list come from, there is no excuse for those losers being elected in those states.

“Notice the states the last 8 on your list come from, there is no excuse for those losers being elected in those states.”

That’s why I’ve been campaigning against moderate senators for almost two years now. And that’s why the establishment has been trying so desperately to destroy and discredit any incumbent challengers this year. Because there are a ton of moderates in the next cycle that can be taken out by conservative challengers.

I appreciate your objective analysis. Fwiw, I would say that, assuming Carr isn’t someone who does stupid things under pressure (like say that gays should be stoned), then it’s worth the fight to turn that situation around. How, though?

Get Levin and Ingraham on it, for one. I think they made a significant difference in the Virginia primary slaughter of Cantor.

And don’t forget Michael Berry, who has a radio show in the Nashville market and has a lot of listeners. He also has a membership-only country music establishment in the Houston area and is on first-name basis with a lot of Nashville musicians (www.theredneckcountryclub.com). He typically doesn’t “endorse” specific candidates if there are 2 good alternatives, especially out of state, but this is different. It’s a race against a known RINO and again, assuming Carr is a good alternative, Berry’s support, even if low-key, could be significant. Berry is a fiscal conservative but leans libertarian (i.e., realistic) in the social issues that involve the sanctimonious ‘hellfire-&-brimstone’ people who are trying to use the tea party movement to shove their “Christian” ideology down people’s throats. And he relates to younger audiences, which would help.

Just my 2 cents.

And you’ve worked very hard at it. I hope that some of the conservative organizations take on the effort to change some of the “incumbent RINO protection” laws/party policies such as open primaries, no runoffs, etc. Changing some of those things would increase the possibilities of challenge efforts being successful.

By the way, keep up the good work.

Thanks deport. I wonder how many of those “Republicans” filing petitions for Senate are Alexander’s or the GOPe’s “spoiler” candidates?

He’s on air now. After 2+ yrs, I pretty much haven’t found anything major that we disagree on. Some have said he’s racist because of his “Shirley Q.” guest spots, but that’s just not true. In fact, it’s ridiculous and only said by drive-by listeners. Btw, his wife was recently selected by Perry as Secretary of State.

Absolutely spot on comment. He's just now appearing on the msm radar and traps will be laid. I see that he was in DC and met with Sen Lee. Hopefully, he's getting some quick start guides as he goes along.

Along the lines of "Not Shooting Yourself in the Foot for Dummies."

“Changing some of those things would increase the possibilities of challenge efforts being successful.”

That’s where the state legislatures come in. The Establishment has put ALL of it’s attention on protecting their precious US Senate. Very little attention has bee paid to the legislative races. We won 700! legislative seats in 2010 (taking 19 chambers) and we may win many more this cycle.

With control of the legislatures, we can change such election laws, change winner take all Electoral vote distributions (ending the Red State/Blue State manipulative game), and pass amendments that come out of the Convention of States.

And the state legislators will eventually become US congressmen and senators.

Good question but I have no idea. I did read an article somewhere talking about that
potential. I don’t remember where I read it.

Tennessee is also an open primary ballot state. So who knows what ballot the voters
will choose at the polls.

Uh oh. An open primary with 7 challengers. “Open” as in Democrats can act as spoilers, I presume. That sucks. We need to know who is genuine and electable in the general election, then consolidate our efforts. Obviously, unless Tennessee voters get behind the best challenger, well... (Where’s that Eyor cartoon?!)

I’ve said for years that we need to hire P.I.s to dig up the truth on RINOs. In cases like this, it would be nice to know who the posers & imposters are. In fact, it’s crucial.

Is this a runoff state? So that if he doesn't get 50%, he has to do a runnoff?

Given the issues that runoffs have given some GOPe candidates this year, you can expect to see a real push at getting rid of them.
