Opinion: Bush, Cheney created the Iraq mess; why not make them try to fix it?
Los Angeles Times ^ | June 12, 2014 | by PAUL WHITEFIELD

Well, gee, $1 trillion or so just doesn’t buy what it used to. Take Iraq, for example.

Or, should I say: Take Iraq, please, someone — and fix it. Fend off the nasty Islamic fighters of ISIS and keep that miserable sinkhole for American lives and money from coming back to bite us — again.

Do you understand now, George W. Bush, Dick Cheney, John Bolton and all you neocon nutjobs, why the invasion of Iraq in 2003 wasn’t a very good idea?

President Obama sure does. Because now he’s neck deep in another crisis in this place, a country he thought he had gotten us out of, as he promised to do.

Now, I do have one somewhat off-the-wall option: Send Mr. Bush and Mr. Cheney over there and let them try to negotiate a solution. And tell them they can’t come home until they’re successful. After all, they’re the ones who created this mess in the first place.

Holy cow dude...

Bush DIDN’T sell national secrets to the Chinese government.

Bush had this thing just about sewn up when obama took over and WILLINGLY undid things.

Clinton and his wife ought to be in prison for their ENDLESS shenanigans.

Tell us please, what EXACTLY made Bush worse than the criminal Bill Clinton. PLEASE explain.

I think the times meant it as a slam. Instead they stumbled on the solution.

Name the bills Clinton signed that damaged the Constitution. In post 53 I made a very short list of some of the Bush damage. The Patriot Act and Reichland security along with the TSA were his personal handiwork. We will suffer his Gestapo forever.

What did Clinton do that destroyed so much of the Constitution? Presidents swear an oath to defend the Constitution. Bush intentionally shredded a big chunk of it.

“Put the adults back in charge”

What do you mean?

Our foreign policy adventures for many decades now have been a total disaster and looted the American treasure.

Are you suggesting we re-invade and occupy Iraq for another decade, maybe two?

That includes, in some cases military equipment, it includes intelligence assistance

Gezzz

Won't this mean our spy agencies will have to stop hacking and spying on the American people first? I wonder who they see as their biggest threat?

actually I concur with the LATimes

Lets put Bush and Cheney back in charge back of US policy and in command of the US military

I think the military also would approve

Throw in Petraeus too - he might be useful

Are you prepared to deal with the terror base launch pad that will emerge?

The ME countries that were cobbled together by politicians after WW1 were bound to fail. Forcing enemies to live together in a false state is idiotic. The borders were and are just lines on a map...people should have been left to settle among their own kind instead of cramming together groups that hate each other ....idiocy.

We should have simply flattened Iraq and then put in a viceroy and a mercenary army paid for with Iraqi oil revenues.

We do not have the belly for empire... we should not engage in nation building and we should quit trying to force crazy people to live in democracies....they are unfit to live in a democracy and don’t wish to anyway.

The replies on this article are a clear example why conservatives lose. You all take this liberal's attack at face value, and immediately try to defend against them. You'll lose every time.

Why not call the writer a racist for suggesting that Obama, a black man, can't handle this situation? Something like a Planned Parenthood press release always works. Example:

The racist comments from this LA Times writer are not only unfortunate, but extremely disturbing. We at the __________ believe that America needs to come together to solve problems for the American people and our children, and we must move past the racism and hatred as displayed by this man. We strongly condemn the barbaric and racist remarks he made in this article, and urge the LA Times to take appropriate action to set an example for our children.

What I mean is to take the fight, to those that want to destroy the west. Bring the battle to their soil.

OK, we did that.

Now that we brought them the battle, what is the purpose of the battle? What outcome do we desire? And what means are necessary to accomplish the desired outcome?

"Bringing them the battle" is a tactic. It's not a strategy.

We desperately need a strategy.

We need to go back into Iraq and suck all the oil out of it, like we should have done the last time.

“Give Cheney command he will fix it.”
Rapidly.

When conditions are way worse than when Bush went into Iraq, and way way worse than when B. Hussein took over, nothing short of a few nukes will undo the damage the most incompetent president in U.S. history created in just 6 years.

Millions of us argued, yelled and screamed that President of the United States is not a job where a total inexperienced idiot can "learn on the job."

Facts are facts.
Total Fail!

We should have just cut a deal with Saddam Hussein and let him conquer Kuwait — and then Saudi Arabia, while he was at it.

Prior to the Obama administration, the general consensus was exactly that. Unless we made the commitment to cccupy Iraq, we were looking at large scale terror bases and weapons of mass destruction being developed and possibly being used.

All that Obama has done was create a vacuum that another Sadaam wannabe is occupying. Already Iraq is sending in their commandos, laying the ground work to expand their operations inside Iraq also.

As I have argued before, upon deaf ears here at FR, is that when the US unilaterally disarms and we leave our enemies to arm and build it leads to wider war. We were in West Germany for how long?

That is my thinking. Now that we have pulled out and we are not going to return, it is a waste of bandwith to argue over whether we return. We aren't and our enemies are preparing for wider war.

So I assume your answer is yes.

Spend trillions more in American treasure we don't even have, more American blood, etc. for a country ya can't even train and won't even fight for themselves? No, no way.

The only I’d go back in and spend one more drop of American blood or trillions more in American treasure we don’t have, is if we seized the entire country and all of it’s oil etc. We own it. Give the Iraqis just enough to survive, that’s it.

Otherwise, no GD way, they can fight their own GD internal battles.

Not at all FRiend.

I explained in another post that it won't happen. We will not go back in now and especially not under Obama.- However, it will not be an internal battle. They will and are expanding their dreams of an international Caliphate and all of the reasons why we first went in will become even more apparent as they build bases of operations and send their scum around the world to fight the infidels.

We are fools. We are cowards. And- we will pay for it with far more blood and treasure than we could imagine because we could not finish the job.

Now things are far far worse.
