As the threat from Sunni militants in western Iraq escalated last month, Prime Minister Nuri Kamal al-Maliki secretly asked the Obama administration to consider carrying out airstrikes against extremist staging areas, according to Iraqi and American officials.
But Iraqs appeals for military assistance have so far been rebuffed by the White House, which has been reluctant to open a new chapter in a conflict that President Obama has insisted was closed when the United States withdrew the last of its forces from Iraq in 2011.
A spokeswoman for the National Security Council, Bernadette Meehan, declined to comment on Mr. Malikis requests and the administrations response, saying in a statement, We are not going to get into details of our diplomatic discussions, but the government of Iraq has made clear that they welcome our support in combating the Islamic extremists.

ISIS is moving faster than coalition forces. WOW!
The damned Iraqis should be able to handle these insurgents. Instead, they're running like hell with their tails between their legs.
We spend YEARS training and equipping them. They should be able to fight. An insurgent group should'be be able to topple two cities almost unopposed.
We as Americans can't want a modern and successful Iraq more than the Iraqis do.
All you people who died and suffered fight for Iraq.
You did it all for nothing.
When the war on terror started, the big Democrat talking point was that it would be "another Vietnam". Well they have made it so. They have done it before, and would rather throw a nation to the wolves than be wrong.
Active duty ping.
Didn’t we already do this?
The way events are unfolding is reminiscent of Vietnam in March and April 1975 and Cuba in mid-December December 1958.
All of the sudden, Fidel’s forces came out of the mountains and started taking over Cuban cities.
Batista’s forces were on the run and on New Year’s Day 1959 the Communists (who the “New York Times” and Communist sympathizer reporter Herbert Matthews chose to portray as freedom fighter led by a “George Washington” named Fidel Castro) rolled into Havana.
Ever wonder why EVERY decision that he makes is detrimental to the USA? Seems to me that if he was just honestly stupid, at least a few of his choices would actually be beneficial- but can anyone point to any beneficial actions of BHO?

Until we ALL understand that the bastard that we need to fight is an illegal alien from Kenya with a photo-shopped birth certificate, nothing will change. I'm not sad, I'm pissed.
Ping.
Yup, unfortunately.
I weep for our country and our allies.
Flying against ISIS in Iraq, and for them in Syria,,,, Aint it grand?
The coming wave of Iraqi refugees is going to give us more Islam, more "home-grown" terror, and more Democrats.
I think doing nothing will just make the whole middle east realize they can do whatever they want. I'm not for boots on the ground, but do SOMETHING.Show some leadership! Before you now it we'll be standing alone against a new Muslim Empire. And there will be nothing we can do about it.
Have we even heard from Bozo yet or is he off golfing and collecting donations while the world burns?
Since I am a Vietnam vet, that has always left a bad taste in my mouth.
I doubt he even knows what’s going on at this point.
Bet the WH wakes up now....
