When a teenage student brought a gun into Troutdale, Oregon's Reynolds High School on June 10, the carnage he could have caused was cut short by two armed resource officers who ran toward the sound of the shots.

The officers--Nick Thompson and Kyle Harris--closed in on the shooter's proximity in "less than a minute."

But, in Seattle the claim was all you needed was a can of pepper spray to take down a bad guy with a gun!

Oh, my brain is strained! What to believe!

It also helped that his double barreled shotgun malfunctioned on one barrel. The whack job only got off 2 shots

School cops? (Not paul blart mall cop.) Here in Reno, they call them Resource Officers but they are deputy sheriffs and have all the same duties as the common everyday sheriffs deputies. They’re just assigned to certain areas. Used to be one for just about every school but I think the “rove” between them now.

So they were just citizens who happened to be there? Or were they in the employ of the school?

So do you raise your hand and say “Mother May I” so you can get close enough to pepper spry the shooter.

Help me. What exactly is an “armed resource officer” ???

***********************************

In our area, this is what we have & I would think it is similar in other places. Our “armed resource officers” are actual police officers, in uniform and armed. An officer is assigned to each middle/high school and they are there every day during hours when students are there.

School Security Officers and School Resource Officers
Who are they, and why are both assigned to a school? School security officers and school resource officers work in tandem, but each has a very different set of esponsibilities. The school security officer, or SSO, is hired by the School Board and is responsible for ensuring the safety and security of the learning environment. The SSO also enforces the Code of Conduct. The School Resource Officer, or SRO, is employed by the Division of Police and is assigned to the school to deter crime, conduct investigations, and enforce the laws of the state. Both wear uniforms, but the SSO is unarmed.

At Sandy Hook Elementary, where there was no armed guard, Adam Lanza had approximately four unimpeded minutes to carry out his evil intent.

It seems to me there's quote about "When seconds count..."

So he was armed with a shotgun? The weapon of choice espoused by Plugs Biden? The news reports I first heard said the shooter was armed with an AR-!5. Wow - who would think the (ene)media would be wrong about something like that [/sarc]

Seriously, I haven’t gone looking for the details and they are certainly not being talked about in the media, other than Obama’s comments.

The Seattle Pacific University guy with the pepper spray jumped in when the shooter paused to reload. So I’m guessing he intentionally got close in, maybe out of view of the shooter, hoping for just that kind of opportunity. BTW, he was a student security guard. Thankful to God he was there and came through when he was needed.

I knew something armed must have put an end to this because our local media didn’t even cover the story, yet they covered the Las Vegas shooting, but not this..now I know why, armed guards ended this, something the media refuses to acknowledge

As others have noted, it's a school police officer. In my neck of the woods, resource officers have the same training and powers as the city police.

But it's oh-so-scary to say "school police officer", so administrators just call them something else.
