In a stunning upset propelled by tea party activists, House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-Va.) was defeated in Tuesdays congressional primary, with insurgent David Brat delivering an unpredicted and devastating loss to the second most powerful Republican in the House who has widely been touted as a future speaker.

A friend of mine who lives in that district posted on facebook that she thinks a lot of Dems voted for Brat to help take Cantor out.
Looks like a wake-up call to cry-baby Boehner and the GOP Rove Establishment marched on by Palin!!!
Amen, dear kingattax, amen.
I can’t understand South Carolina. Especially after this week of a flood of minor illegal aliens breaking the southern border! Can’t wrap my head around it.
Ingraham admits Graham is a great (ick) retail politician. We are doomed with Graham and Bush.
Mean while, in the House: "OK, fellow House members, who wants to bring up Immigration Reform this year ... come on now, raise your hand ... anyone ?"
I think it was mainly due to the candidates themselves. The three credible candidates were all problematic. Cash could not raise money (ironically) and had lost a congressional race. Bright had a state legislator position, but unlike McDaniel, screwed up his finances and made some statements that were ill-advised. Mace was billed as the big cahuna (everyone wanted her to run because of her high name ID as the first female citadel graduate), but she stumbled out of the gate had really dismal interviews, was just not ready for primetime.
Unity would have helped, but you really need an ideal candidate or ideal conditions to win. The candidate was gold in Mississippi. The conditions were gold in Virginia. Dave Brat had no help even from national Tea groups, but Cantor was so out of touch, that the genial Brat trounced him.
Neither the conditions nor the candidates were good enough in SC this year unfortunately.
Open primary?
The Tea Party did not help Brat.
Ingraham said on Kelly file that Brat called the Tea Party national and they wouldn’t even return his calls. Laura was on the inside of this campaign.
She said a few TP groups around the state attended his speeches, but door to door Virginia voters were fed up. $200,000 Brat to 5 million Cantor.
Money always wins, but not in Virginia.
If the Tea Party didn’t help, did the dems push brat over the top?
So, Virginia voters are throwing a temper tantrum again ??

To which I respond: Lettuce Roll.
“Well, if Boehner does not seek it, unfortunately it goes to Whiplash McCarthy in terms of seniority...”
$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
Whoa, hang on. The Speaker doesn’t go to the one with seniority. In fact, the Speaker doesn’t have to be a House member at all!
“The Speaker of the House is the presiding officer of the chamber. The office was established in 1789 by Article I, Section 2 of the United States Constitution, which states in part, “The House of Representatives shall choose their Speaker...” The current Speaker is John Boehner, a Republican who represents Ohio’s 8th congressional district. The Constitution does not require that the Speaker be an elected House Representative, though all Speakers have been an elected Member of Congress.[1]”
We could have Newt Gingrich be Speaker. Or Mark Levin. or Tom DeLay (wouldn’t THAT be a hoot?). Or Eric Cantor, for that matter. (I may wish I hadn’t said that.)
I didn’t realize that the Tea Party didn’t help Brat. That’s not good. Some Tea Party groups are GOPe.
True, but it was Eric Cantor’s presumed position to take if Boner left. There’s an expectation, like that freshman aren’t allowed to speak for a year after being elected. Luckily we’re shattering the establishment’s machine.
I really want King or Labrador to go for a coup on the heels of this.
“That said, Brats victory is huge. Shamnesty is dead, and another conservative enters the House.”
Still have the nutcase democrat to defeat. We’re not there yet.
how can this be, the tea party is dead....
Seniority? There’s dozens of Repubs with more seniority than McCarthy. It’s his job to lose because he’s part of the Boehner gang.
Possibly, but why? Cantor was the pick up artist for the Dems in congress, even running with Guiterriz, a big amnesty pusher for Pelosi. Pelosi has been hand holding Boehner and Cantor, while Obama has been ecstatic about doing amnesty by August! Not now, my friend. Not now.
Good analysis. Thanks.
Here in Colo. the two Republicans (Gardner and Buck)running for US Senate got together and decided who would be best to go up against RAT Udall. They did the right thing and Gardner should beat Udall. Buck is running for the US House and will also beat the RAT in that race.
