Cop refuses to work at gay pride parade in Utah
San Francisco Chronicle ^ | June 6, 2014

A Salt Lake City police officer has been placed on leave after refusing an assignment to work at a gay pride parade.

The officer was among about 30 officers assigned to provide traffic control and security for the annual Utah Pride Parade on Sunday in Salt Lake City, said department spokeswoman Lara Jones.

"We don't tolerate bias and bigotry in the department, and assignments are assignments ... To allow personal opinion to enter into whether an officer will take a post is not something that can be tolerated in a police department," Jones told KSL.

She declined comment on the officer's reason for refusing the assignment.

Faith and family for sure, dignity doesn’t really play into it for me. He’s right though, God will judge him, not man.

I think it’s as another poster said, and the chief knew he would be opposed to this and tried to force him into it.

Many Somali cabbies simply refuse to transport people who are drunk, may be sober but are carrying alcohol or some other item offensive to Islam. Yet, police may be disciplined. Muslim workers at grocery stores refuse to handle pork and other offensive items, yet retain their jobs.

An assignment is an assignment.

Not really. Especially in this case where the officers are being told to ignore the law.

When cops can decide who to protect and where they want to serve, then why have them anymore?

They have been doing so for a very long time. Remember the case saying that the police have no obligation to protect you?

From what I’ve seen of such parades, I would refuse to work.

I don't think that's the point. The point is, the Department characterized any consientious objection to homosexual displays as "bigotry".

Obama must have blackmailed the LDS leadership

He needn't have bothered; RINO Romney already took care of it.

As one who has siblings who are officers and having worked with hundreds of LEOs, I have never had an officer inform me that they were ORDERED to ignore established laws.

They never worked in Philadelphia, then.

Salt Lake City has been voted one of the most gay friendly cities in the country for years.

I wholeheartedly take the part of the suspended officer. I'm tired of our government types saying that we Christian citizens do not have the right or protection to not be forced to accept moral deviancy or religious objectionable decisions while all the while gladly accepting and forcibly protecting the beliefs and positions that are specifically anti-Christian in any and all forms.

In essence they say we do not have the same rights or protections as that of the immoral folks that seek to punish or destroy any and all who disagree with their lifestyle. Tyranny is tyranny. I hope the officer can successfully sue the offending PD for mega bucks.

Gay rights apparently means no rights for others.

Or that we Christians should be regulated to a second tier class of serfs.

How about letting the ones who support the gay parade police it and those who don’t want to participate, not have to? Isn’t that what they call Liberty?

I was just going to let this comment go but I can’t refrain.....cabbies and grocery store workers, government or private sector employees? Cabbies and store workers represent their respective businesses. Police represent/work for ALL. You are comparing apples and oranges.

I see what you are getting at, and that is the way it used to be and should be—follow orders no matter the situation. It’s a complex issue that in the past was not as complex. Yes, they represent their businesses, but they also serve/assist customers of all different sorts of groups/backgrounds, etc. If Muslims are allowed to refuse or alter services in the private sector, they will CERTAINLY be allowed to refuse or alter service in the public sector.

For instance,
