Hes described as quiet, gentle, outdoorsy; a young man of deep Christian faith and dedicated student on the cusp of a promising life beyond college. But by several accounts Thursday, a single word prevailed when describing Seattle Pacific University student Jon Meis: hero.

This young man was packing pepper spray, Haven’t seen enough good news today and wanted to get this story up about a religious, armed student, who is quick thinking and was quick to act. He saved lives!
So hiding in a closet doesn’t work? hmmm
Rough day here. Thank you for this post
I’m curious as to what motivated the gun man. Did he have a hatred for Christians because they are anti-gay, or what? My daughter graduated from that college.
He pepper-sprayed the gunman while he was reloading, and held him down until the police arrived, and the article is unsure whether he saved any lives?
The all-leftie Seattle Times repeatedly remarks he is known by his fellow students as a nice guy, but withholds any mention of his Christianity until the end of the story. I think they hate to admit what principles motivated him.
Still a great story. Maybe we’ll get some less reluctant reports from other sources as this story develops.
Oops, sorry, I failed to credit that opening sentence.
The hero also may have broken the university’s idiotic “code of conduct” by having pepper spray on him. No joke.
Waiting for the anti-pepper spray crowd to strike up the band to ban pepper spray on college campuses and anywhere else young people who can’t control their impulses (per anti-gun crowd) might be found. Same reasoning why licensed concealed carry isn’t allowed on college campuses. DOING something, if you have the means to ‘do something with’ saves lives, not hiding under desks and getting shot in the head as you wait for the police/SWAT to arrive and do something.
That may be the case (not sure what the school’s code is), but as I understand it from listening non-stop on this for almost an hour driving home yesterday, SPU routinely does security/safety drills, and this young man (other reports say he was part of the school’s ROTC program), was said to be the “student building monitor” and I’ve heard him described as the student “security monitor”. If he was the student building monitor and/or security monitor, perhaps they allowed him to carry pepper spray - don’t know, just a thought.
Probably did. My school considered pepper spray a weapon no different than a firearm due to the fact that in MA you need. “Firearm ID” card to even purchase it.
No doubt leftists are whining how no one talked to the gunman while he was reloading and asked them to please not shoot them, or else they will throw pens and scrap paper at him.
Yes and pepper spray is illegal on many campuses.
My employer won’t allow guns on campus, so I pack pepper spray. Sometimes, I’ve had to keep it in hand while on the streets, it’s so rough. (Seattle / Tacoma)
He had the pepper spray since he was part of a student security patrol. By the local account I first heard he was SUPPOSED to be there. He was having trouble holding the dirtbag down by himself but a couple other nearby students pitched in for the “pin”. AAAAAnnnddd while they had him down a nuclear wedgie would have been appropriate, at least.
Thanks much for sharing this. Nice to see some good news lately with all that has been in the headlines lately.
LOL Use the backside for a blindfold while he was still wearing them, works for me!
My son goes to SPU so have been watching the local news. The hero, Jon Meis was described as “gentle, strong and prepared” by those that know him. One of his roomates said that he was almost timid - but could also get very intense.
Another student said of his job as building monitor (or whatever the term is) was mainly to make sure the doors were locked at night. Another kid said he would walk by him sitting behind the desk at the front door and think “Man, what an easy job!”
He is set to be married two weeks from tomorrow!
Someone found his gift registry and posted it, with people buying presents for him! (His Crate & Barrel list had one item left!).

Rest in Peace to Paul Lee, freshman student that died at the hands of the nutball gunman (who had twice been put into mental evaluation/care).
They say the nutball gunman had a shotgun and a knife. The photo from inside the building shows what seems to me to be a revolver laying on the floor. Maybe a hunting knife case - but then I would think it would be laying flat. Instead it looks like it is leaning due to resting on the cylinder. (Combined with the early reports of two shooters.... Which seems to happen ALL the time.)
To avoid sounding like a nutball conspiracy guy (which I am to a degree!), perhaps it is due to conflicting accounts of the description of the same person.
“The guy ran that way and he had a shotgun!”
Two minutes later someone says, pointing in a different direction; “He ran that way and had a knife! His hair color!? I don't know - all I saw was the BIG knife...”
