The Rolling Stones concert in Tel Aviv, their first in Israel, was a huge success -- musically and politically. Mick Jagger shrugged off pleas to cancel from the usual anti-Israel suspects. The Israel-boycott movement was left with another defeat.

Who does the public like better, the Rolling Stones, or the WaPo crowd?
I don’t think they know what BDS really is. Bush Derangement Syndrome.
Geez. I guess it’s a good thing the Stones aren’t still doing the Bridges to Babylon tour. :>} Saw that in Orlando many years ago with commie lovin’ santana opening for them. I don’t think he was wearin’ his che t-shirt that night.
I wish my late hubby was alive to see this.
He was Jewish, and a huge fan of both Israel and the Stones. (sigh)
Awesome!
They had an actual bridge with 2 big lights for eyes that elongated from their main stage over the crowd, and down to a small intimate stage about the size of a garage in the middle of the arena. It was beyond cool. They played some of their most early stuff like the garage band they were in the beginning. No special lighting or gimmicks - just Mick, Keith, Charlie, Ron, their long time pianist, and the bass player they've had for years.
Of course Mick camped it up going to it and back to the main stage. Poor Charlie was hanging on to the rails both ways. The latest live concert DVD's are weak, especially Martin Scorsese's tribute. Think they should retire before one of them keels over at a performance.
Last time I saw them was at the LA Coliseum around 1990 when Guns & Roses opened for them. G&R were having internal problems and Axl Rose whined about it might be their last concert to the audience.
Stupid thing to do because when the Stones finished their big intro number, Mick said, "Hey, how about Guns and Roses?, but they should play more and talk less"! The applause was deafening. I will never forget it and the Stones kick them off the tour a couple dates later. You don't upstage Mick Jagger...har!
Sorry Beatles fans, but who do you hear most at your local watering hole? Who has the most songs on a jukebox? I rarely hear the Beatles on dinosaur classic rock stations, but the Stones are always played. Still, I admit the Beatles were good song writers, but they had no soul.
Best intro ever to a rock song? The hauntingly "Gimme Shelter" intro. That song (and other Stones hits) have been in the soundtracks of countless movies.
Saw them at the Cotton Bowl in 89, Living Colour opened for them.
Sounds familiar. Always wondered why Living Colour had a couple of catchy hits and then faded away. Probably internal differences like many bands. I've always been amazed that the Stones have lasted so long. You'd think they would get tired of each other.
One arena rock band that fell apart due to drugs but made THE biggest comeback with more hits is Aerosmith. Can't believe they're still filling stadiums, but then what a catalog of songs. I also wonder what the Beatles would have done if they hadn't broke up. More of McCartney's solo and Wings pablum? I don't think Lennon had the makings of a true rock n roll artist to evolve. He was too political and wore it on his sleeve and in his music - think "Imagine". Barf!
I was there. I have seen them three times. Can’t remember which tour, but it rained a bit at the Cotton Bowl at one show. They kept playing.
Stones or Living Colour?
Don’t have the video but when we went to the concert in Orlando, our seats were about 4 away from the “outer platform” so when the bridge swung out to it we had awesome seats. Quite a production. We weren’t sure what the contraption was at first thinking it was maybe for the sound guys but it proved to be a pretty cool piece of engineering for the bridge to swing out that far and the guys to run across to that platform for a couple of songs.
What’s the difference between the Rolling Stones and the WaPo?
The Rolling Stones will probably still be around in ten years.
Buy the DVD for a different perspective from where you were. If you have a HD television and surround sound, I guarantee you won't be disappointed. You'll probably watch it over and over as I do.
BTW, when they finished on that small stage in the round and headed back up the bridge to the main stage, did the other musicians start a percussion intro to "Sympathy for the Devil"? They do on the DVD. Jaggers multi-color duster was just damn cool. Few others could pull that off without looking pretentious.
It was the end of the outdoor festivals until the California Jams I&II years later. Was at the first one.
Good one.
Cult of Personality should be Obama’s Theme song.
Macca is great live......One of the great moments is when he does “Live and Let Die” with the explosions going off.
Gimme Mick, gimme Mick
Baby’s hair, bulgin’ eyes, lips so thick
Are you woman, are you man
I’m your biggest funked-up fan
So rock me and roll me ‘til I’m sick.”
