DARIEN A woman accused of embezzling thousands of dollars from a local veterans' organization also volunteered as a bookkeeper for the local Veterans of Foreign Wars post, police said Wednesday.
Cynthia Tanner, 52, has been charged with first-degree larceny, accused of stealing $185,000 from the National Veterans Services Fund in 2013. Police estimated that Tanner, who was employed as the organization's bookkeeper, embezzled more than $830,000 from the organization over five years.
Police said Wednesday that they have discovered irregularities in the financial statements of VFW Post 6993 in Darien, where Tanner volunteered as a bookkeeper for several years. Police have made no arrests in the VFW investigation.
Tanner remains in police custody with bail set at $500,000.
Greedy indeedy.
Stuff like this happens so often..small non-profits, charities..churches..and it is so easy to prevent most of it. Shortly before I first asked to be treasurer of my then parish some 35 years ago..there was a story in the paper about the long time office worker at another church stealing funds over many years. So I agreed to take the post as treasurer with one condition. I would have no ability to sign checks. I’d supervise the bills, prepare the checks...but two signatures would be required...the office manager and the senior warden. Period..Yes, it was a tad inconvenient once in a while...but it pretty much made sure there could be no fraud..
What a low life, stealing from vets that put their lives on the line so she would have the opportunity to do the thievery.
That, my FRiend, is the Look of GUILTY
I don’t think the proceeds went into facial reconstruction surgery or into a health spa plan either.
Hmm let me guess who she voted for in the last two elections...
Definitely didn’t spend the stolen cash on weight watchers. What a sweetie!
And very stupid at that.
I don’t want to have things thrown at me, but any organization that has a female in charge if their finances better check their books regularly. Studies have shown that embezzlers are far more likely to be females than males by a two or three to one margin. Some analysts peg it higher than that, around four out of five. This woman fits the profile of the typical female embezzler. Maybe the only major crime, where females outdo males.
so was she employed or was she a volunteer? it says both in the article... are volunteers considered employed? just wondering...
Not sure... but it doesn’t make a difference...
what?
thank you!
not sure if she was employed or a volunteer..but you still don’t let her sign checks..
