Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) on Tuesday said the Obama administration told congressional leaders about a possible prisoner exchange for Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl more than two years ago, but then never followed up.
In a statement, Boehner said lawmakers had thought they would be consulted again, and blasted the White House for trading five Taliban leaders for Bergdahl without notifying Congress.
He also said lawmakers were opposed to the exchange when it was first raised, and accused the White House of keeping Congress in the dark because of that opposition. "More than two years ago, Members of Congress were briefed on the possibility of such an exchange, and the chairmen at the time and I raised serious questions to the administration," Boehner said in the statement.
"Unfortunately, the questions and concerns we had were never satisfactorily answered and they remain today. At the time, the administration deferred further engagement because the prospects of the exchange had diminished," Boehner said.
Aides pointed to a June 21, 2013, statement by White House spokesman Jay Carney in which he said "we would not make any decision about transfer of any detainees without consulting with Congress" as reinforcing the belief by members of Congress that Obama would not act behind their backs.

Then WHY didn't Congress expose it?
They are culpable TOO, if they were aware of his intention and did nothing.
I think the White House missed the details on Bergdahl and thought they could get away with releasing the monsters by positioning themselves as strongly pro-military (bringing one of ours home) while standing with the mother and father.
Unfortunately, Bergdahl’s actions, his father’s words (and Tweets), the reports from fellow soldiers, etc. are overshadowing the entire deal.
They outsmarted themselves on this one.
Obama is “standing with the muslims” just like he said he would.
Oh, but by raising the possibility two years ago, that was “more than sufficient” advance notice provided to Congress. That neither the Senate nor the House of Representatives actually considered the implementation of this plan, is a failure on THEIR part, not that of the Current Regime. < /sarcasm >
Exactly. I'm waiting on his press conference about his plan, but no mention of it so far. {crickets}
Yes I agree. But so must the GOP that allowed this to happen. And no one can say with a straight face that in DC, they did not know this was coming. No one.
So, what are you going to do about it, John. Sit there and cry?
For sure. Anybody in the know, and that means you Boehner, could have leaked the story, created a firestorm, forcing the WH to deny it and probably dooming the deal.
theyere by and large TERRIFIED of OBIE..and what OBIE has on them!!
All the more reason to get them out of office. They are all compromised.
If people are that stupid to keep electing compromised pols that refuse to oppose this insanity, they deserve Obama.
We can only wish that people are looking into this boneheaded stunt—a vain attempt to get good PR for Mr. Obama—to at long last impeach this clown.
Obama should resign before impeachment for incompetence.
OK. I understand that the Republican politicians are worried that impeaching Obama will cause the inner city Democrats to riot. So what? Rioting is against the law, and they know that. If they riot, it means they no longer consider themselves to be under our laws. Treat them accordingly. What would we do if a bunch of Belgians went into our cities and started tearing things apart?
Make an announcement that all welfare benefits will be immediately stopped in any city where there is rioting. Spray all the rioters with ink. Announce that anyone who wants welfare must reapply with their dependents and anyone showing up with ink on them is disqualified. The entire family is disqualified.
The Democrats keep hinting that they have this hole card of rioting they can lay on the table. Make them play it. It’s probably a deuce. And the rioting can’t be any worse than this baloney the Democrats are pulling. They are destroying our country.
Nothing can be done. At least half of Americans don't give a damn and would rather keep the King for their handouts.
That’s about it. Gutless cowards.
Apparently none of our Congressional Drunks and Alzheimer's patients were up to speed on exactly who Bergdahl was. Of course, all of these ani are wiped by very Left-Wing staffs, even ...gasp ... the Republicans ... staff who are anti-military for the most part and who either didn't know, or thought the guy's open military record was a minor matter.
This blew wide open only after members of Bergdahl's old unit blew the whistle on the Internet. The Demos and RINO Enabler Corps thought that the fuss would come over the released Gitmo Muzzies. True enough, but that was much less than half the story. The outrage over this deserter and traitor caught'em with their pants down.
The mad scramble to get on the "right" side of the story is pathetic, especially in The Drunk Boner's Case. McLame? .... one hopes that by now everyone outside of AZ knows he's an idiot (and mean drunk), like the other senile but hopefully sober Senator Feinstein who also wrong-footed this one.
And ... could be Sound and Fury Signifying Nothing. The tattooed fatties in the Wal-Mart parking lot might not get it at all.
This isn't a Republican problem...this is the United States problem, all political parties problem because Barack Obama has clearly displayed that he is a traitor to his country. Using power to release five extremely dangerous men to prey upon innocent people again, anyone who isn't Muslim...and a Rose Garden Dog & Pony show so ridiculous as to make one cringe. This is an American problem, getting this scat and his fellow traitors out of the White house.
