Seattle to enact $15 minimum wage
Washington Post ^ | June 2, 2014 | Reid Wilson

The Seattle City Council voted unanimously Monday to raise the minimum wage to $15 an hour, equaling the highest minimum wage in the nation.

The law will phase in the higher wages over a three- to seven-year window, depending on the size of a company. Corporations that employ more than 500 workers will have to pay $15 an hour by 2017 if their employees don’t receive company-paid health care. Smaller businesses can wait until 2019 to reach the higher rate. All workers will receive the highest wage by 2021.

“The people who work for a living have basically seen no increase in their incomes since the 1970s,” Mayor Ed Murray said in an interview. “With the federal government fairly stuck, and as we see states more and more adopting that same dysfunction, cities are the place to lead right now.”

Murray spent his first four months in office hammering out an agreement to raise the wage through a task force that included labor, business and nonprofit representatives. Labor groups had threatened to put a wage hike on the ballot this year if the city didn’t increase the wage on its own.

Good. We can’t have all those people who can’t produce at least $15 worth of goods every hour in our sophisticated city.

Some of them are black, ya’ know?

/sarcasm

I am in favor of raising it to $5000 an hour; that way, the average worker would only have to come to work for 20 hours a year to make $ 100,000, lots of additional folks would be hired for the remaining 2000 hours a year and everyone would be well off.

An example of why government can not run anything, as if the VA was not enough.

So raise every minimum worker to $15.

The worker now making $15 will insist on a a raise, maybe to $20.

The supervisor making $20 will have to be raised to $25 or $30....and so it goes.

All because of some kid just out of school who has absolutely no experience and who should probably pay to get the experience.

Using Karl Marx’s ideas to help the middle class is like using Adolph Hitler’s ideas to help the Jews.

That's funny, since the Washington state minimum wage has increased to $10-something from $2 or whatever.

Union wages are tied to the minimum wage (2x, 3x, etc.), so what you describe will automatically happen.

Teenagers and young adults in their 20s, especially blacks and other minorities, aren’t going to be able to find jobs. No one makes “minimum wage” forever. It is an entry level wage to test people out. By definition it can’t be a “living wage.” That’s like walking into a company as a 22 year old out of college and demanding $80,000 per year. If the company is required to pay it, the company won’t hire. Sure, it will pay an experienced person the “minimum wage” but it won’t take a chance on an unemployed teenager or young adult. Then they get stuck in the mythical “cycle of poverty.”

Why? If the increase grows the economy implement it immediately and don’t limit the size of a company either.

Seattle leftists should be enraged at this slow implementation:))

Every business in Seattle will be checking the actual boundaries of the city and will no doubt be looking to move at least 1 foot beyond that line.

Were there no MBA’s on the city council? They do know what inflation is, right?

Seattle’s new motto:

Detroit of the West

And the jobs will magically disappear........

All of those fast food workers demanding $15.00 an hr will be replaced by kiosks.

So...just like unions, they cut their dicks off to spite their face.
